Main purpose of position

ICARDA seeks a post-doctoral fellow in gender research to work as member of disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams in developing countries, mainly Ethiopia. He/she will contribute to conceptualization, data analysis, implementation, and fieldwork for two types of gender research at ICARDA, integrative/mainstreaming and strategic: Integrative mainly related to gender equity and inclusion in access, benefits, and control of livestock- and seed-related technologies and strategic in the nascent field in agriculture of gender transformative approaches (GTAs) and women’s empowerment.

ICARDA’s mission is to reduce poverty, enhance food, water, and nutritional security, as well as environmental health in the face of global challenges including climate change. All CGIAR Centers are currently engaged into a reform process (“One CGIAR’”) that will help ICARDA and CGIAR achieve better impact through more strategically integrated research, unified governance, an integrated structure and new research modalities across participating Research Centers. This transformation is supported by CGIAR donors who have committed to increased funding as a result of these reforms.

Main responsibilities

The incumbent will:

  • Contribute to conceptualization, data analysis, implementation, and fieldwork for integrative/mainstreaming and strategic gender research:
    • Design interventions with technical teams focused on crops and livestock to generate evidence on best approaches to progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.
    • Design and evaluate activities that lead to changes in gender norms and explore the implications of these activities on women’s empowerment.
  • Publish research outputs in refereed ISI journals, books chapters, policy briefs, blogs, tools, working papers etc. for research findings to reach diverse partners, including national agriculture research centres, policy makers, farmers, and development practitioners.
  • Represent ICARDA inside and outside the CGIAR via workshops, expert consultations, conferences, and participation in working groups at one CGIAR level.
  • Develop and strengthen multiple partnerships with a focus on building the gender research capacity of NARS and other key partners.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Requirements

Education, qualifications, and experience

  • PhD in Social Sciences (e.g. Gender Studies, Economics, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Rural Development Studies, Education, Economics, Human Geography, or related fields).
  • 2 years of independent research and project experience in problem-solving oriented research (including the PhD project) that focuses on gender, agricultural technologies, climate change and institutions (e.g., advisory services, input, and credit institutions).
  • Knowledge of current issues in gender and agricultural rural development especially those related to gender norms, empowerment, and transformation.
  • Knowledge about agriculture (e.g. technologies, seed breeding, and livestock production) is desirable.
  • An established publication record related to the position, including in ISI peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong track record of fieldwork and skills for collecting high-quality data.
  • Qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, combination of both is desirable.
  • Good inter-personal skills and an ability to work independently and with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.

Terms of appointment, salary and benefits as per IRS requirements

This is an internationally recruited position for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package, including a competitive salary, housing allowance, non-contributory retirement plan, medical insurance and leave provisions. All benefits are denominated and paid in US Dollars.

The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years, renewable for a maximum of three years of which the first year will be probationary period. Possibility of the extension will be subject to merit and productivity of the staff, funding and continued need for the position.
