1. Organization Summary

CareEpilepsy Ethiopia is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of people living with epilepsy. The organisation addresses medical, psychosocial, and systemic challenges including stigma, mental health, diagnostic access, and capacity-building for health workers across Ethiopia.

2. Job Purpose

  • Deliver High-Quality Clinical Care with patient-centered services.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve care access and advance organizational goals.
  • Serve as the primary contact for patients, families, and caregivers, addressing concerns and providing expert guidance.
  • Offer resources, recommend referrals, and advise fellow professionals as needed.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support individuals affected by epilepsy, including workplace accommodations.
  • Provide clinical service guidance to the clinical team.

3. Key Responsibilities

A. Clinical Service Leadership

1. Clinical Coordination & Operations

  • Oversee daily clinic workflow, triage, patient scheduling, and referral systems.
  • Maintain clinic service schedules and coordinate GP rotations.
  • Ensure use of clinical protocols, safety standards, and correct documentation.
  • Coordinate monthly neurology appointments and specialist involvement.
  • Strengthen quality improvement processes and identify service gaps.

B. Clinical Consultation & Patient Care

  • Conduct epilepsy assessments, diagnoses, and management plans with accuracy.
  • Provide follow-up care, counselling, and medication optimisation.
  • Ensure timely referrals for advanced or complex cases.
  • Serve as a key contact for patients and caregivers, providing clinical guidance and support.
  • Provide workplace and community accommodation guidance for individuals with epilepsy.

C. Diagnostic & Medication Services

  • Perform and supervise EEG procedures and basic diagnostic reviews.
  • Serve as a trainer for EEG use, interpretation, and diagnostic standards.
  • Oversee anti-seizure medication distribution and ensure proper prescribing and dispensing protocols.

D. Training & Capacity Building

  • Design and deliver training for HEWs, nurses, GPs, and community workers.
  • Update epilepsy education materials and clinical guidelines.
  • Conduct internal monthly CME sessions for CareEpilepsy staff.
  • Maintain a database of training participants, sessions, and outcomes.

E. Patient Empowerment (Clinic-Based)

  • Provide clear, supportive guidance during clinic visits to improve patients’ and families’ understanding of epilepsy, treatment plans, medication safety, triggers, adherence, and self-management skills. Ensure every patient leaves the clinic with practical, personalised instructions that strengthen safety at home, school, and work.
  • Maintain detailed clinical records, training documentation, and activity logs.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for internal use and external partners.
  • Support data accuracy and contribute to M&E processes.
  • Participate in program evaluation and guide improvements.

F. Documentation, Reporting & Evaluation

4. Supporting Role

In addition to core clinical duties, the physician supports CareEpilepsy Ethiopia through the following responsibilities:

A. Community Education – Deliver epilepsy education sessions in communities, schools, workplaces, and digital platforms.

B Counselling & Psychosocial Support – Provide supportive counselling to patients and caregivers, addressing emotional, social, and behavioural challenges.

C. Advocacy Support – Participate in awareness efforts, policy dialogues, and organisational representation when required.

D. Partnership Engagement – Support collaboration with government bodies, NGOs, health facilities, and international partners.

E. Media & Communication Support – Assist in visibility activities, including messages for social media, stories, and public engagements.

F. Program Strengthening – Offer insight into programme improvement, service gaps, and opportunities for innovation.

7. Working Hours & Environment

  • 40 hours per week with occasional evening/weekend duties.
  • Based at CareEpilepsy centres with travel across city and regions as required.

Person Specification/Job Requirements

  • Education: Medical degree (MD) with specialization in General Practice or relevant field.
  • Applicants must hold their licence in hand—applications based on pending licences cannot be accepted.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in training, presentations, report writing, and social media content creation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Outlook) and Zoom.
  • Fluent in English and Amharic (written and spoken) with Amharic keyboard proficiency.
  • Ability to multitask, triage, and work collaboratively in a team.

CareEpilepsy Ethiopia is recruiting a dedicated Physician & Epilepsy Clinical Service Coordinator to support and coordinate our outpatient epilepsy services in Addis Ababa.

This role focuses primarily on outpatient clinical care—conducting epilepsy assessments, developing management plans, providing follow-up support, and guiding patients and caregivers. It also includes coordinating clinic operations, managing referrals, supporting diagnostic and medication services, and delivering training for HEWs, nurses, and GPs. Additional responsibilities include counselling, community education, reporting, and supporting collaboration with partners.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Medical Degree (MD) with relevant specialization
  • Applicants must already hold their medical licence in hand
  • Strong communication and service-coordination skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Zoom; fluency in Amharic and English
