Job Description
The Hunger Project (THP) is a global, non-profit, strategic organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. THP believes in a world where every woman, man and child can lead a healthy, fulfilling life of self-reliance and dignity; and works towards that goal by pioneering sustainable strategies for gender-focused and Integrated Community Led Development, which is the process of working together to create and achieve locally owned visions and goals. THP-E is implementing projects in rural areas of Ethiopia since 2004 and currently seeking qualified candidates for an internship position:
MEL Intern
Length of Internship: 6 Months

Position Summary
THP-E Responsibilities
For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
- Working Station
- All required office supplies
- Transport Allowance
- Per Diem and lodging coverage during field visit
- Coverage of Transportation expenses during field visit
- Certificate of completion and an official professional recommendation letter.
The Intern responsibilities
- The intern will be responsible for covering all personal expenses incurred during the internship, including:
- Transport to and from the office;
Medical expenses and any required insurance coverage
Learning Objectives
By the end of the internship, the intern will have developed the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Gained practical knowledge of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) principles, results-based management approaches, logical frameworks (LogFrames), performance indicators, and reporting structures commonly used in international development and humanitarian programs.
- Developed hands-on experience in database management, including database design, maintenance, data validation, organization, and application of data management best practices to support program monitoring activities.
- Acquired practical skills in SQL and NoSQL database management, including data querying, extraction, transformation, validation, and management of structured and semi-structured datasets.
- Strengthened communication and teamwork skills by collaborating with program, MEL, and Support teams to support data-driven decision-making and project implementation.
- Developed strong analytical, problem-solving, data management, and professional communication skills while adhering to organizational data governance and confidentiality standards.
Deliverables
Key Responsibilities
Database Maintenance & Data Entry Support (40%)
- Maintain THP-E’s centralized project databases (Relational and Hybrid SQL).
- Clean and process nested JSON data exports from mobile platforms (KoboToolbox, ODK, CommCare).
- Structure qualitative field elements like narrative text and beneficiary feedback.
- Verify historical indicator trends and manage time-series database entries.
Mobile Data Collection & Form Configuration (20%)
- Program mobile survey forms using XLS Form scripting for KoboToolbox/ODK.
- Troubleshoot form validation errors, skip logic, and deployment bugs.
- Configure offline-first mobile sync workflows for remote field areas.
Data Quality Assurance & Cleaning (20%)
- Perform routine data audits to eliminate duplicates, outliers, and missing indicators.
- Collaborate with field officers to resolve validation anomalies before data syncing.
- Maintain clear database metadata, system codebooks, and data dictionaries.
Reporting & Visualization (15%)
- Run database queries to compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports.
- Support automated data pipelines feeding into Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio.
- Generate localized data visualizations to map stakeholder networks and program coverage.
Administrative Support (5%)
- Photocopy, scan, digitize, and archive MEL documents to ensure proper record management and accessibility.
- Maintain accurate and organized physical and electronic archives of MEL-related documents in accordance with document retention policies.
- Support efficient document management by ensuring timely filing, storage, and retrieval of records.
CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in MEAL, Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, or Data Science.
- Demonstrated understanding of data management and field research.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism, integrity, and a high level of accuracy.
- A letter of recommendation from a university attesting to the candidate’s personal integrity, reliability, and sense of responsibility.
Preferred Attributes:
- Strong willingness to learn and develop professional skills with an exceptional eye for detail.
- Ability to understand SQL fundamentals, including designing basic database tables, defining and managing keys, and writing SQL queries.
- Basic understanding mobile data collection platforms (KoboToolbox, ODK, or CommCare), data analysis tools (SPSS, Stata/R), familiarity with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau), knowledge of NoSQL databases, data pipelines, and cloud-based data repositories (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, BigQuery, and Snowflake) is added value
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
