JOB SUMMARY

Medical Officer contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by providing quality consultation & health care services for internally displaced people, refugees and host community.The Medical Officer is responsible for delivering high-quality medical care, providing consultations, and supporting patients throughout their treatment journey. This role includes clinical assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, patient education, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Medical / Technical  

  • Provide consultations with diagnosis and treatment of illnesses based on the guidelines in Ethiopia and focusing initially on IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses)
  • Support the treatment of co-infections in children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and referred to an appropriate outpatient treatment program.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to the medical doctor or to the relevant referral sites in a timely fashion without delays
  • Prescribe medications and instruct patients on correct usage based on guidelines
  • Ensure medical supplies are available and support the projection of needs
  • Provide patient education and instruct on prevention methods for illness, proper nutrition, and hygiene
  • Compile weekly and monthly reports required by the Ministry of Health as well as UNHCR and provide to the clinic in-charge.
  • Follow EPI routine/campaigns sessions at clinic and catchment
  • Follow infection, prevention, and control protocols through maintaining good hand hygiene and appropriately using personal protective equipment
  • Support the integration of accountability practices into program activities by following established procedures during planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. Help ensure that accountability is reflected in day-to-day tasks, team interactions, and when working with partners or communities.
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding.

Quality Management  

  • Ensure all patients are treated based on the Guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the IMCI guidelines.
  • Ensure rational use of drugs such that only those essential for treatment are prescribed. Do not overprescribe.
  • Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who present to the clinic.
  • Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Medical Doctor or BSc in Public Health Officer

EXPERIENCE 

  • A minimum of 1 year of professional experience after qualification in providing direct health care service
  • Experience working with INGOs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:   

  • Knowledge of humanitarian standards, donors, systems and principles, e.g., Sphere, CHS, Red Cross Code of Conduct, etc.
  • A basic understanding of health systems.
  • Knowledge of development & humanitarian issues and concepts
  • Proficiency in Afarigna is an added advantage.

Skills:  

  • Moderately skilled with office software: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Moderately skilled with communication software: Outlook, Skype, Internet, CRM (or other database programs).
  • Humanitarian motivation.
  • Emotionally and spiritually mature.
  • Analytical and problem-solving Computer literate, able to work efficiently in Microsoft office on standard or mobile platforms.

  • If in travel status, occasional to frequent traversing over rough or steep terrain in either a motor vehicle or on foot.
