Opportunity
As the Foundation expands its work across Africa, this is an exciting, growing opportunity to employ the latest research and evaluation tools to measure impact on the ground and guide future strategies. Working alongside the Foundation’s Chief Research and Evaluation Officer (CREO) and fellow team members, the Manager, Research and Evaluation (RE) in Assosa will play a critical role in implementing and executing the Foundation’s research and evaluation strategies in Ethiopia.

Duties and responsibilities

Research and Evaluation
  • Responsible for implementing and executing evaluations of the Foundation’s current and future projects in Ethiopia; primarily in education, water, and productivity/employment.
  • Managing day-to-day research and evaluation activities in Ethiopia
  • Regularly assessing program implementation progress in the field.
  • Designing and piloting survey instruments.
  • Supervising and training field staff.
  • Managing field staff in the collection of social and economic data.
  • Ensuring that data collection is executed with the highest quality.
  • Supporting data analysis, which may include cleaning, managing, and uploading data.
  • Ensuring that Foundation resources are being spent in a cost-effective manner.
  • Contributing to the production of research reports.
  • Regular travel to project locations in Assosa, Ethiopia, and other locations as needed.
Institutional / Administrative
  • Supporting the programme design process in Ethiopia across different sectors, such as reviewing and editing various documents required in the process.
  • Ensuring that local programme teams are on board with RE protocols.
  • Educating local teams on key RE concepts and ideas, as needed.
  • Keeping the CREO and other RE team members informed on the progress of local projects.
  • Organizing and facilitating field research trips for team members in Ethiopia.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and requirements

  • Degree in relevant field (political or social science, economics, international development, statistics, etc.).
  • Strong track record of outstanding academic performance.
  • Minimum 5 years of field management experience.

Personal attributes

  • Creative and entrepreneurial self-starter, with a focus on execution and results.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Solution-focused and eager to take initiative.
  • Ability to articulate complex ideas, summarize problems, and identify key lessons, clearly and effectively.
  • Proficient with survey platforms, like KoboCollect or SurveyCTO.
  • Proficiency using statistical tools, like Stata or R, is preferred.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage field surveys, focus groups, and randomized evaluations.
  • Ability to multitask and balance multiple work assignments.
  • Most importantly, excellent interpersonal skills. In this position, you will be required to work efficiently with teams in a variety of different locations and contexts.
