Our mission is to ensure that by 2030, all Ethiopians have access to quality education without the need for foreign aid.

Currently, in the Oromia region, Imagine1day, in collaboration with the World Food Program/WFP/ is implementing a Five-Year McGovern-Dole program – School Meals for Improved Learning and Empowerment (SMILE) Project in 157 primary schools across 5 woredas, reaching 73,439 children. The program focuses on improving early grade literacy foundational skills through the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, working in partnership with the Oromia Regional Education Bureau, Woreda Education Offices, schools, and communities.

Position Summary

The Literacy and Education Project Officer (Oromia) will be responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day implementation of foundational literacy interventions in the program’s target schools. Working in close collaboration with Woreda Education Offices (WEOs), school leaders, PTAs, and teachers, the Officer will ensure the effective adaptation of the TaRL approach to improve student attendance and strengthen primary-level learning outcomes. The role also emphasizes the sustainability of interventions by integrating awareness-raising activities on hygiene, nutrition, and primary health care, in alignment with WFP policy.

Job Summary

Position Title: Literacy and Education Project Officer

Duty Station: Oromia Region – 5 Woredas (covering 157 primary schools)

Contract Type: Contract for 4 months with possible extension based on performance and funding

Required Number: 13 (Thirteen)

Reporting to: Regional Literacy and Education Program Coordinator (Oromia)

Functional Relationships: Education Specialist (Oromia)

Salary: As per the Organization’s salary scale

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous training, mentoring, and coaching to teachers, school leaders, and PTAs to enhance instructional practices and school-level management.
  • Monitor classroom teaching and learning practices, track learner progress, and promote the effective use of TaRL and other supplementary learning materials.
  • Work closely with Woreda Education Offices (WEOs) to improve school attendance, retention, and primary-level literacy outcomes.
  • Lead literacy campaigns and back-to-school mobilization initiatives, with a strong focus on the inclusion of girls and children with disabilities.
  • Integrate awareness-raising activities on hygiene, nutrition, and primary health care within school and community interventions, in alignment with WFP policy.
  • Collect, analyze, and share data to support monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of program achievements and challenges.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Planning, Pedagogical Sciences, and Curriculum & Instruction
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in education project implementation, literacy/foundational skills programs, or teacher training, and school principal
  • Demonstrated experience in structured pedagogy approaches (TaRL, phonics, remedial education, accelerated learning).
  • Strong facilitation, coaching, and classroom observation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Amharic; knowledge of Afan Oromo language is an added advantage.
  • Ability to work in remote and challenging environments with frequent travel using a motorbike.
