Laboratory Technologist -Assosa

Job Description

Role Summary

The Laboratory Technologist performs accurate and timely diagnostic laboratory tests to support patient care, disease prevention, and clinical decision‑making. The role requires strict adherence to standard operating procedures, quality assurance systems, and biosafety regulations, while contributing to laboratory efficiency, reliability of results, and mentorship of junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

1. Diagnostic Testing and Analysis

  • Perform routine and specialized diagnostic tests in areas such as hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and serology, as assigned.
  • Strictly follow approved SOPs, testing algorithms, and laboratory protocols to ensure consistency and accuracy of results.
  • Validate test procedures and ensure samples are processed within acceptable timelines.
  • Identify abnormal or critical results and promptly escalate them to the Laboratory Team Coordinator or relevant clinician.

2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate laboratory instruments and automated analyzers in accordance with manufacturer instructions and institutional guidelines.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and function checks of laboratory equipment.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions, document issues, and coordinate corrective actions with supervisors or technical support providers.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and use of reagents, chemicals, and consumables.

3. Data Recording, Analysis, and Reporting

  • Accurately record test findings in laboratory registers, information systems, and reporting tools.
  • Analyze test results for accuracy, validity, and clinical relevance before release.
  • Maintain complete, clear, and traceable laboratory documentation in compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Contribute to timely and accurate reporting of laboratory results to clinicians and stakeholders.

4. Quality Assurance and Quality Control

  • Implement and monitor internal quality control (IQC) procedures daily.
  • Participate in external quality assessment (EQA) and proficiency testing programs.
  • Identify deviations from acceptable quality standards and take corrective or preventive actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing laboratory performance and reliability.

5. Biosafety and Infection Prevention

  • Comply with biosafety, infection prevention, and waste management protocols always.
  • Ensure safe handling, transportation, and disposal of biological specimens and hazardous materials.
  • Promote a safe working environment by identifying risks and reporting incidents or near‑misses.
  • Participate in laboratory safety audits and emergency preparedness activities.

6-Customer Service

  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling patient samples and inquiries.
  • Collaborate with front‑desk and client service teams to resolve issues promptly.

7. Supervision, Mentorship, and Team Support

  • Supervise junior laboratory staff, technicians, and interns during routine duties and practical training.
  • Provide mentorship, on‑the‑job coaching, and technical guidance to improve staff competence.
  • Support performance monitoring and skills development within the laboratory team.
  • Foster teamwork, professionalism, and adherence to ethical laboratory practices.

Qualifications

  • Education: BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field.
  • Experience: 2–5 years in clinical laboratory settings and has valid license.
  • Skills: Attention to detail, analytical thinking, laboratory instrumentation knowledge.
