Job Description

Mission and objectives

UN Women supports United Nations Member States in setting international standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to formulate and enforce the laws, policies, programs and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and that they truly benefit women and girls around the world.

Context

Under the overall guidance of the UN Women Special Representative to AUC and UNECA, the Knowledge management and communication specialist will provide technical and coordination support in the development, implementation, and visibility of the UN Women LO knowledge management and communication activities as well as develop, implement and provide visibility to the knowledge management Action Plan for UN Women specific activities as defined in the joint SIARP Knowledge Management Strategy and Implementation Plan (2021 – 2023). Moreover, the position holder will be responsible for initiating, producing, disseminating, and documenting effective knowledge management and communications products; provide support to the coordination of events, and advocacy initiatives.

Task description

Under the overall guidance the UN Women Special Representative to the African Union Commission and the Economic Commission for Africa, the knowledge management and communications specialist will undertake the following tasks.

1. Knowledge Management

• Initiate and contribute to the documentation and dissemination of knowledge, evidence-based information, promising practices, lessons learned, impact stories, and innovations of the Liaison office key initiatives and flagship programs including SIARP

• Strengthen engagement with SIARP knowledge management focal points, through sharing of resources, guidance, and tools and encouraging the exchange of promising practices and lessons.

• Collect and consolidate inputs from UN Women Country and Regional Offices to inform the development of knowledge products.

• Identify areas for promoting new knowledge and innovation that can support the implementation of Spotlight Initiative programmes and for increasing global commitments to EVAWG.

• Coordinate the development of the Joint AUC, UN Women, and UNECA Newsletter on GEWE

• Regularly update the Liaison Office shared drive folder to ensure all knowledge products and relevant resources are documented.

2. Communications:

• Provide communications and advocacy support to joint regional campaigns, launching initiatives, Knowledge products, and publications.

• Design communication and engagement materials to support the visibility of knowledge management activities of the Liaison Office and SIARP program (visuals, infographics, posters, presentations, brochures, etc ensuring brand compliance).

• Prepare concept notes, agendas, and related working documents for the regional-level policy advocacy and strategic partnership-building initiatives.

• Coordinate the implementation of visibility, communications, and knowledge management activities with partners including RUNOs.

• Ensure wide dissemination and visibility of knowledge products and programme achievements.

• Write and/or disseminate press releases, pamphlets, editorials, branded materials, and other written communications materials as required.

• Coordinate the provision of training and coaching on Communication, visibility, and knowledge management to Stream 1 implementing partners.

• Liaise with the relevant communications team on the development of visual assets, templates, and other resources for ongoing strategic advocacy and communications actions related to Liaison initiatives.

• Provide communications and advocacy support to joint regional campaigns, launching initiatives, Knowledge products, and publications.

3. Coordination

• Provide support to the coordination of events, and advocacy initiatives.

• Prepare background research, briefing notes, and talking points to inform UN Women’s engagement in advocacy platforms and initiatives.

• Participate in UN inter-agency coordination meetings, and meetings with AU partners and prepare the notes for files and minutes

• Participate and contribute to relevant regional policy processes and technical working groups.

• Lead on coordination of visibility, communications, and outreach activities in relation to critical events on the annual calendar of the Liaison office and partners.

4. Planning, Reporting, and Administrative Support

• Provide inputs to the Liaison work plans and project/program documents.

• Provide inputs to the liaison’s quarterly and annual reports and other reports

• Provide administrative and logistical support to implement liaison activities if needed.

• Any other related tasks may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
