Job Description

Result of Service

Effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure including providing a framework for tune up of the ILMS, IR and to assist in further development of the ASKIA portal. The portals are expected to be of modem, simple and practical design, user-friendly, with smooth navigation, good information resources and working tool for the UNECA staff, UN Agencies, partners and general public.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background

The ECA Institutional Repository is continuously undergoing further development to enhance its functionality as well as software upgrades in response to users’ changing information needs as well as the need to adopt new emerging technologies for better knowledge services and products. Since its implementation, various enhancements have been added on the ECA IR, including Software upgrades as well as developments of replicates/mirrors to enable participation by the Sub Regional Offices.

The Access to Scientific and Socio-economic Information in Africa (ASKIA) Initiative defines a framework for bringing together scientific and socio-economic information for the African community, including scientists, researchers, academics, students, economists and, policy-makers, over an interactive online portal acting as a one-stop shop to such knowledge and associated information

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Library and Knowledge Services Section (KLSS) the successful candidate will:

• Adapt ECA’s systems (ECA IR, collaborative platforms, portals) to new development;
• Assist in further development of the ASKIA portal;
• Transfer data from the old to the new Website, which will also have additional new content;
• Provide technical support, tune-up and perform other tasks related to the KLSS Website;
• Provide testing and validation support for the Library application development including ECA IR, ASKIA, ILMS project;
• Re-design the already existing KLSS website;
• Liaise with ITUSS for the configuration and troubleshooting when problem occurs;
• Ensure, in collaboration with ITUSS that ILMS database has backup;
• Assist on software development matters, including security, data integrity and recovery
• Assist in the evaluation and modify system’s performance;
• Be responsible for maintaining, expanding, and scaling the website;
• Assumes responsibility for the development and maintenance of the ILMS Web interface;
• Assist in developing and maintaining installation and configuration procedures of the Library Information systems;
• Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as require;

Qualifications/special skills

  • Recognised 1st level Degree
  • Must have 7 years work experience in progressive hands-on knowledge in oft ware development especially on Information Management Systems.
  • Experience in Web development field, solid portfolio of accomplished Web projects is desired.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in English is required.
