Duration: Up to 6 months (as per internship agreement)

Working Hours: 8:00

1. Background

The International Solidarity Foundation (ISF) is a Finnish development organization founded in 1970. ISF’s mission is to support development that strengthens democracy, equality, and human rights globally, and to challenge people to build a more equitable world. It works to build a world in which women and girls are empowered to shape their futures, exercise full self‑determination, and have their right to bodily integrity respected.

ISF’s vision is to become a leading organization in the empowerment of women and girls in East Africa by 2030. ISF’s thematic priority is the prevention of female genital mutilation (FGM)—a severe violation of women’s and girls’ bodily integrity and autonomy. To reach its vision, ISF has three strategic objectives:

  1. ISF is a leading enabler in the eradication of FGM in East Africa
  2. ISF has growing funding and strengthening brand awareness
  3. ISF is innovative and adaptive to changes in the operational environment

The Communication Intern will contribute to ISF’s visibility, documentation, and storytelling efforts, supporting the organization’s broader mission and strategic communication objectives.

The purpose of this internship is to provide the intern with practical, structured experience in communication, storytelling, digital media, and content production. The internship is educational in nature and does not guarantee employment at the end of the engagement, in line with the organization’s internship agreement provisions

2. Objective of the Position

The Communication Intern will support the organization’s communication, visibility, and documentation efforts. The objective is to strengthen storytelling, digital presence, and visual documentation while enabling the intern to develop professional skills in communication.

3. Duties and Responsibilities

A. Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Develop compelling human‑interest stories, feature articles, and field‑based content.
  • Support documentation of project activities for reports, newsletters, and website content.

B. Photography & Multimedia

  • Capture high‑quality photographs during project visits, events, and activities.
  • Assist in organizing and archiving photo and video assets.
  • Support basic video editing when needed.

C. Social Media & Digital Engagement

  • Draft, schedule, and publish posts for social media platforms (LinkedIn).
  • Support digital campaigns and online visibility efforts for HQ

D. Graphic Design (Asset)

  • Design simple communication materials (posters, banners, social media cards) using tools such as Canva, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
    (This is an added advantage but not mandatory.)

E. Administrative & Coordination Support

  • Support event organization and communication for internal and external activities.
  • Maintain communication files and organize

4. Learning Opportunities for the Intern

In line with the internship agreement, the intern will:

  • Receive close supervision and mentorship from the assigned supervisor and collegues in the communication department
  • Gain hands‑on experience in writing, photography, and digital communication.
  • Build a portfolio of communication products.
  • Learn the organization’s communication standards, policies, and tools.
  • Participate in relevant internal meetings and training sessions.

5. Expected Deliverables

  • Write article and stories as requested or needed
  • Regular photo documentation from field visits and events.
  • Communication materials (as applicable) produced in a timely manner.
  • Well Organized digital repository of photos, stories, and communication assets.

Duration and Termination

  • The internship lasts up to 6 months.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

  • Background in Communication, Journalism, Media, Marketing, or related field.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills.
  • Basic photography skills.
  • Experience in social media management.
  • Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate willingness to learn.
  • Graphic design skills are an added advantage.
