Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women supports United Nations Member States in setting international standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to formulate and enforce the laws, policies, programs and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and that they truly benefit women and girls around the world.
UN Women through its Liaison Office to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) engages with the AU and its various organs, the UNECA and civil society organizations, as well as the diplomatic community. Through the office, UN Women provides technical support to Member States and the AU in the adoption, implementation and monitoring of commitments on gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE), in accordance with its mandate.
The African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) is a UN Women liaison Office flagship programme, commissioned and launched in 2018 by UN Women, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The AUC through its department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS), the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) and Department of Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI) and other Implementing Partners namely UNECA, UNESCO and UNICEF who provide technical support to this initiative. Phase III of the initiative has focused on empowering adolescent girls and young women (ages 17–25) with digital literacy, coding, and entrepreneurship skills across Africa and it has made substantial progress in promoting girls’ participation in STEM and digital innovation, contributing to Africa’s broader digital transformation and gender equality goals.
This phase has operated under four main key strategies namely: coding camps, national media campaigns involving role models (e.g., women in ICT, female teachers in schools), mainstreaming ICT, coding, and gender into the national curricula and providing more opportunities to AGCCI Alumni through the use of an on-line e-Learning platform and mentorship programme to enhance networking among the girls, trainers, and mentors and to help the girl coders to continuously update their skills and connect with a supportive online community to share ideas and opportunities.
In alignment with the Strategic Note of UN Women Liaison Office (2023-2025) through its Output 1.2.3 “Ensuring that all Young girls from different background have equitable access to STEM education, decent job opportunities and increased skills in digital literacy and leadership” and since inception:
To bring to life AGCCI’s journey—its vision, achievements since 2018, and ongoing reach across Africa—showcasing its success in narrowing the digital gender divide, the Liaison office proposes to bring onboard a video editor to help in the production of the AGCCI documentary. The video editor will work with the Liaison office Communications Assistant and the country offices through coordination efforts to define documentary style, narrative structure, and messaging.
Job Summary
The consultant, report to Programme Assoicate- AGGCI will oversee the documentary activities with the country offices and liaison office, and edit the footage sent into a comprehensive journey of AGCCI.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact.
