Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia (HFHE) started operation in 1993 as a branch of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). HFHE has provided simple, affordable shelter for families in Ethiopia while also working to improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and empower Vulnerable Groups in the country.

JOB SUMMARY

The Hygiene and Sanitation Officer is responsible for ensuring the identification, promotion education and development of Hygiene and sanitation capacity building in the target communities with effective, sustainable participatory strategies. He/she is responsible for facilitating and coordinating the sustainable capacity building activities with regard to personal hygiene and sanitation, environmental cleanliness and capacity building of tap water and sanitation facilities users with other stakeholders and liaison groups within target community beneficiaries. He/ She will work for Addis Ababa and Shewa robit project activities and will report to project Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify the hygiene and sanitation gap in the target community and propose strategically effective way of addressing the need.
  • Facilitate and ensure the provision of education for target community on sanitation and hygiene concepts.
  • Conduct market assessment of demand and supply needs in target community and provide recommendations on models of sanitation marketing.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to identify, select and establish youth and women interested in supporting sanitation campaigns.
  • Review available hygiene and sanitation technical guidelines and training manuals and make recommendations for the project and for the NO use.
  • Organize showcase workshops and learning forums in partnership with other stakeholders and liaison beneficiaries to facilitate linkages and partnership new initiatives.
  • Serve as main focal person for activities related to hygiene and sanitation strategy development, coordination of trainings and stakeholders.
  • Ensure the hygiene and sanitation messages are promoted at household level in the project area and integrated with the community lead total sanitation activities (CLTSH).
  • Design information, education, and communication (IEC) materials; and create appropriate WASH related messages and plans for promotion and communication to users.
  • Create and strengthen the local actors to participate in WASH activities, liaise with woreda, and community level stakeholders: microfinance, water, health offices to effective implementation of WASH
  • Prepare Beneficiary data’s, carry out beneficiary community selection through engagement of FSC Members
  • Prepare reports to government stalk-holders and donors.
  • Prepare and timely submit progress and other reports to his supervisor as required.

Duration of the contract:  1 year with possibility of extension.

Duty Station:   Addis Ababa

Job Requirements

  • University degree in Public Health, Environmental Health
  • Experience and knowledge in community level WASH interventions is added advantage.
  • A minimum of 4 years of related work experience.  
  • Strong team player and ability to develop and maintain effective working relations at all levels both within and outside the team.
  • Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in the local language and English.
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of HFHI
  • Should be a team player, driven by own initiative, good communicator and have ability to work under minimum supervision.
  • Good communications skills and the ability to influence promotional efforts.
  • Good computer skills (MS-Office and internet use)
