Health and Nutrition Officer -Tahtay Adiabo

Job Description

Role Purpose

The position holder will play a key role in delivering mobile health, nutrition, and basic primary healthcare services in Tahtay Adiabo Woreda, Tigray Region, particularly for remote and hard-to-reach kebeles, drought-affected communities, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) where access to fixed health facilities is limited or disrupted. The service includes life-saving community-level interventions such as screening of children and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) for acute malnutrition, and management of cases through Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP), Stabilization Centre (SC), and Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme (TSFP), as well as provision of basic treatment for common childhood illnesses, maternal and child health (MCH) services, and health education. It also strengthens the referral system by identifying and referring severe or complicated cases from community and mobile outreach sites to nearby health centres or higher-level health facilities for appropriate management

Key responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day MHT activity and implementation plan which aligned to the health center and woreda based plan.
  • The plan should consider preventive, promote health, curative health service and

    nutritional status of children and PLW. Additionally, he/she is responsible for preparing a joint daily movement plan with corresponding woreda and PHCU and submitting.

  • Responsible for Acute and life-threatening illnesses treatment at the primary health care level
  • Responsible for Safe motherhood and child health consultation
  • Supporting integrated mobile health service modality, daily dispensary, and drug supply management
  • Responsible for day-to-day documentation of service provided.
  • Strengthening of early referrals mechanism.
  • Provide supervision, technical assistance, and capacity building to entire MHNT and health extension workers.
  • Strengthening linkages and coordination mechanisms between community, health facilities and the Woreda health office.
  • Responsible for Working at temporary Adult OPD and manage all cases Communicable and NCD.
  • Responsible for Medical Consultation encountered by the team, including reproductive health
  • Compile weekly and monthly reports and share with MHTS team leader /focal person at Woreda health offices and PHCU level.
  • Support the team and coordinate activities

Technical Support and Facilitation

  • Provision of technical support to the MHNT, local partners and local government
  • Participate in needs assessments and problem identification activities.
  • Foster linkages with partners and other stakeholders in the public and private sector at local level to enhance synergy, collaboration and learning.
  • Conduct and document regular field visits to monitor progress, receive community feedback, and to check on the quality of MHNT services and impact of activities.
  • Participates in logistics coordination by collaborating with the logistics department on the procurement, transportation and distribution of MHNT,materials and other inputs as required for the program.
  • Improving basic preventive health care at community level in line with public health emergency principles with emphasis on preventing maternal and newborn deaths.
  • Conduct & undertake family health services as part of primary health care
  • Provide maternal nutrition counselling and breast feeding including Iron and Folic acid supplementation for pregnant mothers
  • Strengthening of early referrals mechanism in addition to maternal and child health illnesses.
  • Ensure all referral cases are properly transported to the nearest higher health facility or Woreda capital.
  • Strengthening linkages and coordination mechanisms between community and the Woreda health bureaus.
  • Facilitate planning and promotion of awareness creation on Family planning including available contraceptives, Nutrition and preventative health care issues in the community.
  • Strengthen effective communication and close working relationships among other nutrition partners, program beneficiaries and Woreda Health offices,

Essential knowledge, skills and experience

  • Degree in Health officer or Nursing.
  • 3-4 years relevant experience
  • Proven and demonstrable experience of working in a similar role and context.
  • Demonstrable communication skills, with good spoken and written English and local language(s).
  • Computer literacy in MS Office applications.
  • Good technical/programme knowledge in area of responsibility
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
