Mission and objectives

The mission of UNESCO Addis Ababa is to contribute to sustainable human development in a culture of peace underpinned by tolerance, democracy, and human rights through programs and projects in UNESCO’s fields of competence: Education, Natural Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Culture and Communication and Information. The UNESCO Addis Ababa office comprises of the Liaison office with African Union Commission (AUC ) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the National Office for Ethiopia.

Context

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), contributes to peace and security by promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication, and information. Through knowledge sharing and policy dialogues, UNESCO supports Member States in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.

Since January 2011, the UNESCO Office in Addis Ababa has served as the Liaison Office to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), as well as the National Office for Ethiopia. Its role is to implement the Organization’s Approved Programme and Budget at the country level and to advocate for UNESCO’s mandate and unique role in advancing international cooperation by ensuring coherence between UNESCO’s global priorities, the UN Agenda 2030, the AU’s Agenda 2063, the AU-UN coordination mechanisms, and Ethiopia’s national development frameworks.

As the UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office reaches the end of the 2022-2025 strategic period, this exercise aims to support the presentation of key office reports that document programme implementation and results. This assignment will contribute to improving the clarity, consistency and visual presentation of the Office’s reports for internal and external dissemination.

Task description

Key objectives of the review include: Under the direct supervision of the relevant Programme Specialist, the volunteer will design the layout of the following documents to ensure clarity, consistency, and visual appeal in consultation with Heads of sectors. The work will ensure that the reports present information in a clear, structured and visually engaging format, while maintaining consistency with UNESCO editorial, graphic and visibility standards.

1. Design the layout of the following documents to ensure clarity, consistency, and visual appeal: · Report of activities implemented in Ethiopia · Report on Year of Education 2024 2. Ensure all outputs adhere to UNESCO editorial, graphic and visibility standards, integrating relevant feedback from staff and partners.

Deliverables and Timeline

The volunteer is expected to provide timely, quality and comprehensive deliverables for the reports listed above .

Assignment requirements

Required experience

Candidates should have professional experience in graphic design with previous experience in designing document layouts, and must have in-depth knowledge of graphic design applications, as well as good verbal and written communication skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • · Proficiency in Canva.
  • · University degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in communication, design, development studies, or related fields.
  • · Experience in reviewing, editing and producing high-quality reports and publications for UN or similar organizations.
  • · Strong coordination, research, analytical and writing skills with de demonstrated attention to detail.
  • · Experience in graphics design and layout, preferably using tool such as Canva, Adobe, or InDesign.
  • · Excellent drafting and communication skills in English; knowledge of French is an asset.
