Job Description

Children Believe Fund (CBF) is a child-centered, community-based international development organization devoted to addressing the needs of children, their families and communities by implementing programs that focus on, health & nutrition, WASH, education, early childhood development, child protection sustainable livelihood development, disaster risk reduction and gender equality in different parts of Ethiopia.

Currently Children Believe Fund wants to hire one Gender Specialist for nutrition focused new project titled Championing Health and Gender Equality (CHANGE) to be implemented in North Wollo Zone of Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia.

Job Responsibilities: 

Gender Specialist will design and prepare detailed plan for gender equality and gender-responsive nutrition approaches with culturally and socially acceptable innovative approaches and specific gender equality promotion strategies.  Gender Specialist is responsible for providing technical support to and guide the project team and key project stakeholders to enable them implement activities that are effective in terms of promoting gender equality and improve women’s leadership and control over resources for community and individual gender-equitable nutrition practices at household and community levels. She/he technically leads knowledge/awareness raising activities that enhance gender equality, and the integration and mainstreaming of gender in health and nutrition programs. She/he undertakes supportive supervision and monitor of the project and prepare and submit reports related to gender equality.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to: 

  • Ensures the design and appropriate planning of gender equality promotion interventions in participatory way involving concerned government offices, communities, and CBF project staff and responsible actors in nutrition.
  • Prepares detailed implementation plans of gender equality along with specific gender equality promotion strategies.
  • Creates or adapt innovative approach in ensuring gender equality in rural context during the design and implementation of nutrition interventions
  • Develops contextualized social and behavioral change communication (SBCC) materials and training manuals and guides on gender and ensures that the SBCC and training materials are properly in use.
  • Facilitates and lead trainings and workshops on nutrition program and produce and submit training and workshop reports.
  • Technically leads knowledge/awareness raising activities for influencing harmful cultural perceptions, norms and practices that are bottlenecks to enhance gender equality.
  • Provides technical supports (guidance, advice, trainings, orientations, and coaching) to the project staff and concerned government staff on integrating and mean streaming gender into nutrition, SRHR, MNCH, and WASH, among community members.
  • Ensures active engagement and participation of key influential members of the community in promoting gender equality.
  • Provides technical support to and guide the project team and key project stakeholders to enable them identify the root causes of gender inequality and solutions to the challenges and implement gender equality interventions.
  • Identify and share best practices and experiences of others with project team on gender equality
  • Undertakes supportive supervision and monitor of the project.
  • Ensures timely implementation of gender equality interventions to the standard with appropriate approaches.
  • Actively participates in relevant platforms. networks and clusters for knowledge, experience and information sharing for effective harmonization and synergic effect of gender equality interventions.
  • Fosters effective working relationships with project stakeholders.
  • Ensures that gender equality interventions took into account the equality between men and women and their equal rights are enhanced in all processes of project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Develops and submits reports related to gender equality interventions as per agreed reporting format and set reporting due dates.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Terms of Employment: One year with possibility of extension

Job Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • Master Degree or BSc Degree in Gender Studies and Sociology from recognized university.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience for Master Degree; and minimum of 9 years’ relevant experience for BSc Degree.
  • Experiences should be in gender equality or gender promotion or women social and economic empowerment projects and preferably working at least for 5 years with INGOs.

Skills, Competencies, Attributes, Traits, and Behaviours:

  • Fluent in Amharic and good in speaking and writing English language.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal communications, relationship-building, team player, conflict management, and negotiation skills, especially when developing / maintaining contacts and influencing stakeholders for collaboration and coordination of project activities.
  • Very good expertise and skill in providing technical support on gender.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet and other computer applications.
  • Be available and willing to work in fragile context and emergency situation.
  • Able to travel in rural areas.
  • Able to multi-task and on occasion work in high pressure environment with tight deadlines
  • Productive personality traits, patience, sociable, responsible and courage.
