Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for a Gender Expert to execute quality implementation of the Gender and reproductive health thematic area in synergy with the holistic safeguarding focusing on girls and women protection component. He/she will plan, implement and undertake follow up gender related activities.

Your role?

Some of the specific roles and responsibilities of the position holder will be as follows, but not limited to these:

    • Implementing, monitoring and reporting Gender equality and women empowerment Program
    • Conduct community based dialogues and facilitate school girls dialogues  on women and girls right and gender equality
    • Conduct experience sharing visits to model women and girls on changing gender roles and responsibilities, facilitate girls inspirational session regularly
    • Enhancing women and girls empowerment and ensure gender equality and women empowerment through their meaningful participation and engagement in economy, political right and social aspects
    • Organize and facilitate community dialogues and girls on women leadership and empowerment to enhance their engagement of social, economic and political participation
    • Organize and facilitate different capacity building training and workshops for key stakeholders on women ‘s right and girls empowerment and create awareness about gender equality, Reproductive health and rights among the local community
    • Maintains regular communication and interaction with government office partners to facilitate and promote learning and information sharing,
    • Document best practices and compile lessons learnt to ensure documentation, learning and advocacy
    • Establish links and good relationships with relevant government offices/authorities and with likeminded NGO’s in the area to ensure collaboration and networking
    • Mentor and coach women and girls in the project site, conduct monitoring progress and report project results regularly
    • Perform other additional duties as assigned by his/her supervisor

Job Requirements

Must Criteria

Education: A minimum of Bachelor Degree in Gender studies, public heath, sociology, social work, Development studies, or similar discipline

Experience: 4 years relevant experience and Female candidates are highly encouraged.

Competencies – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • The incumbent requires knowledge of social work theories, practices and procedure
  • The incumbent requires knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies.
  • The incumbent requires specific knowledge in the areas of needs assessment, family dynamics, the impact of trauma, psycho-social functioning theories and practices and child protection theories, models and practices
  • The incumbent requires knowledge of case management, case conferencing and investigation and intervention theories and practices.
  • The incumbent must be able to respond or assist in emergency situations and have very good interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • The incumbent must also has the knowledge of child right and UNCRC
  • He/she must have well developed organizational, verbal and written communications skills, interviewing and analytical skills and good computer skills.
  • Having knowledge & exposure to a range of gender mainstreaming & gender development issues
  • Ability to evaluate and integrate gender equality strategic objectives into broader program strategies
  • Fluency in written and spoken in English and Amharic; Afan Oromo is mandatory
  • The incumbent must be flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation and be knowledgeable of the services available in the community. He/she must demonstrate sound judgment particularly in dealing with aggressive care givers and children at risk.
