Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Intern

Location:  Adama, Ethiopia

Organization: National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE)

Job Description

Job Summary:

The GESI Intern will support the NEBE GESI Department in integrating gender equality and social inclusion principles across all electoral operations for the upcoming General Election.

Key Responsibilities

1. GESI Integration and Monitoring Support

  • Assist in reviewing training materials, voter education content, and operational manuals from a GESI perspective.
  • Support the monitoring of electoral activities (e.g., voter registration, candidate nomination, training) to assess the participation of women, PWDs, and other target groups.
  • Help collect and compile sex-disaggregated data and other inclusion-related data from field reports.

2. Logistics and Coordination for GESI Activities

  • Provide logistical support for GESI-focused workshops, consultative meetings, and training of trainers (e.g., for women candidates, election staff with disabilities).
  • Assist in coordinating with the Training Department to ensure GESI components are effectively included in all electoral training curricula.
  • Support the preparation and distribution of inclusive communication materials (e.g., braille, easy-to-read formats, audio messages).

3. Stakeholder Communication and Liaison

  • Facilitate communication between the GESI Department and NEBE regional office on inclusion matters.
  • Assist in maintaining a database of GESI-focused CSOs, Disabled Peoples’ Organizations (DPOs), and women’s groups.
  • Support follow-up with regional offices to collect reports on GESI-related activities and challenges.

4. Reporting and Documentation

  • Assist in drafting monthly updates on GESI department activities.
  • Help prepare briefs, presentations, and success stories on inclusive electoral practices.
  • Document minutes and action points from GESI-related meetings.

5. Administrative Support

  • Maintain organized filing systems for GESI documents, data, and correspondence.
  • Support the processing of relevant activity reports and payment requests related to GESI initiatives.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Development Studies, Law, or a related field.

Work Experience

  • 0-1 year

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong interest and understanding of gender equality, social inclusion, and human rights issues in Ethiopia.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and handle multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Language:

  • Required: Fluency in written and spoken Amharic and English.
  • Strongly Preferred: Proficiency in one or more other regional languages (e.g., Afan Oromo, Af Somali, Tigrigna, Afar).
