Alight has provided humanitarian assistance to millions of beneficiaries in 29 countries over the past 40 years, currently reaching over 10 million refugees, IDPs, and disaster-affected communities in 17 countries around the world, helping people regain control of their lives after conflict and natural disasters. Alight maintains full-fledged humanitarian programs in Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, Thailand, and Myanmar. Alight is currently in the process of responding to humanitarian situation in Ethiopia.

Alight focuses on lifesaving humanitarian interventions as well as recovery and resilience building programs designed to create lasting positive change in the lives of vulnerable people. Alight works closely with displaced persons, returnees, refugees and communities affected by natural and man-made disasters, providing a range of integrated assistance including primary and curative health care, water and sanitation, protection services, restoration of strategic health and water infrastructure, dignified housing for returning refugees, and sustainable job creation. Alight has also built strong relationships with development partners, agencies, as well as federal and local governments in order to approach challenges in an inclusive and holistic manner and come up with innovative solutions that best fits the local context.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Protection Officer, the GBV officer provides support on the day-day management and coordination of GBV activities in the field. The GBV Assistant will supervise the response and prevention of GBV, train and supervise the protection mobilizer and GBV community workers, and social workers to respond and ensure effective implementation of GBV activities; and utilize monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure high quality services. The GBV shall attend coordination meetings/platforms of protection, health, legal, and shelter/NFI clusters as deemed necessary to respond to multiple needs of GBV survivors and prevent violence against women. The GBV Assistant will also establish and maintain networks with community leaders, women leaders, service providers and camp management to ensure that women and girls receive compassionate support from the community.

MAJOR/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mobilizing community participation in GBV activities in the IDP camps.
  • Participating in meetings at Hargeisa level (Protection cluster, GBV sub cluster) with other partners for coordination and follow-up on GBV activities.
  • Developing innovative and sustainable GBV implementation strategies closely monitoring behavior change and regularly appraise on existing strategies on GBV.
  • Referring all GBV related cases to the response team for management.
  • Conducting training sessions for identified community and agency staff on GBV issues.
  • Organizing and facilitating workshops for community workers, change agents, support groups and agency workers.
  • In conjunction with livelihood unit, initiate income generating activities that help alleviate suffering of GBV survivors to eradicate dependency syndrome.
  • Developing and maintaining positive and professional working relationship with other agencies.
  • Analyzing, compiling and submitting monthly GBV reports to the project officer for sharing.
  • Regularly monitoring GBV activities and provide feedback for adjustment of activities as needed.
  • Ensuring that assigned projects achieve set goals, objectives and outcomes.
  • Assisting in mid-term or end of project evaluations on GBV on project impact.
  • Prepare and submit activity progress reports including weekly, monthly GBV, 4W matrix & SITREPs.
  • Keeping inventory of all items in the sector and NFIs distributed disaggregated by age gender.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the sector’s operation plans/work plans & reviews.
  • Assigning tasks to protection mobilizer to ensure effective, efficient and timely implementation.
  • Conducting regular meetings with protection mobilizer.
  • Reporting on the performance of the protection mobilizer to the Supervisor.
  • Provide mentoring support to protection mobilizer and community volunteers.
  • Fulfill any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • BA/BSc degree or Diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, Nursing, Women’s Studies or GBV related training
  • At least, 2 years of relevant work experience for diploma holders and 1 year for degree holders
  • Clear understanding of gender, power abuse, and issues surrounding violence against women.
  • Able to maintain medical ethics, confidentiality and respect for client at all times.
  • Experience in participatory techniques and community mobilization
  • Excellent report writing and fluency in both Somalia and English languages.
  • Proficient in use of computers, able to use – Microsoft Word, Excel and Epi-Info and relevant data processing
  • software packages. Should be conversant with use of internet and email systems
  • Fluency in English & local language
  • Fluency in other local and national languages is an advantage
