Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated more than 13 million patients and today deploys its operations in 14 countries. In 2023, ALIMA cared for 2.8 million patients, including over a million children under the age of 5, received 157,393 people for mental health consultations, assisted 67,617 births, carried out 64 projects in 14 countries. Whenever possible, we work in partnership with local NGOs to ensure that our patients benefit from the best and most relevant expertise wherever it is, whether within their own country or in the rest of the world. In addition, to improve the humanitarian response, we are carrying out operational and clinical research projects, particularly in the field of the fight against malnutrition and viral haemorrhagic fevers.

ALIMA’S TEAM: more than 2000 people are currently working for ALIMA. The field teams, closest to the patients, receive their support from coordination teams generally based in the countries’ capitals. These receive support from the 4 desk teams and the emergency and opening team based at the operational headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. The Paris and New York teams are actively working to raise funds and represent ALIMA. The rest of the ALIMA Galaxy includes individuals and partner teams working on behalf of other organisations such as medical NGOs BEFEN, ALERT Health, SOS Doctors / KEOGO, AMCP, research organisations PACCI, and INSERM, Bordeaux or Copenhagen Universities, the INGO Solidarités International, and many others.

ALIMA IN ETHIOPIA

ALIMA, registered in Ethiopia in December 2022, worked in the Somali region, south-east of the country. ALIMA implemented a Health and Nutrition project in three woredas in the Afder zone from May 2023 to October 2024, followed by another integrated health and nutrition response in two woredas from  May 2025 – present.  In Tigray, ALIMA also supported integrated health and nutrition programs in Shire (May 2025 – May 2026) and Southeastern Zone (November 2024 – present).

Pending confirmation of donor funding,  ALIMA plans to launch an integrated response in health and protection to support refugees in the Gambella region (Nuer Zone, Makuey Woreda, Luakdong Refugee Camp).  The project intends to focus on ensuring 24/7 access to quality Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), including Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC), Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) for GBV survivors, integrated Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), and establishing a vital medical referral loop to Nyangnyang Primary Hospital.

LOCATION OF POSITION:  Gambella region, Lukdong Camp & Nyangyang with frequent visits of project areas within Nuer zone, Wanthoa, Makuey, & Akobo Woredas and Gambella Town.

Being a new region of intervention for ALIMA, the new team will guarantee the implementation of the new project as well as all administrative and logistical requirements to establish ALIMA in the region. This team will be based in the Nuer zone, Nyangnyang town and Lukdong Refugee Camp, and will ensure the implementation of the activities and a smooth beginning of operations on the ground.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

Reports to: Midwife Supervisor

Collaborates and Interacts with: Activities supervisors (MHPSS, OPD, IPD), the pharmacy/logistic team, and partner’s community protection workers.

PROTECTION OF BENEFICIARIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Level 3: As part of his/her duties, the incumbent will visit programs and come into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults. Therefore, a criminal record check or a certificate of good character will be required. In situations where a criminal record check or character reference is not possible, a declaration of honour will be requested.

MISSION AND MAIN ACTIVITIES

Main Purpose

The Midwife is responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality, and client-centered Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in a refugee camp setting. The position will ensure the provision of Antenatal Care (ANC), Postnatal Care (PNC), skilled birth attendance, family planning services, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) response services, including Clinical Management of Rape (CMR). The Midwife will contribute to reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality through the delivery of emergency and routine reproductive health services on a 24/7 basis.

Accountabilities

  • Provide comprehensive antenatal care services, including maternal and fetal assessment, screening for pregnancy-related complications, health education, preventive interventions, and referral of high-risk pregnancies.
  • Provide skilled birth attendance and continuous intrapartum care, ensuring safe delivery, immediate newborn care, management of obstetric emergencies, and timely referral of complicated cases.
  • Deliver postnatal care for mothers and newborns, including assessment, counseling, breastfeeding support, identification of complications, and follow-up services.
  • Provide voluntary, rights-based family planning counseling and services, supporting informed choice and access to appropriate contraceptive methods.
  • Deliver confidential, survivor-centered care for GBV survivors, including clinical management of rape, emergency treatment, psychosocial support, documentation, and referral to specialized services.
  • Recognize, stabilize, and manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies within scope of practice and coordinate timely referrals when necessary.
  • Conduct health education and awareness activities on maternal and newborn health, family planning, GBV, and reproductive health to promote positive health-seeking behaviors.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, registers, and reports, ensuring timely collection and submission of reproductive health data and indicators.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control standards and contribute to continuous quality improvement of reproductive health services.
  • Work closely with health, protection, and community teams to ensure integrated, high-quality reproductive health and GBV services within the refugee camp.
  • Uphold safeguarding, PSEA, confidentiality, and professional ethics standards while ensuring the dignity, safety, and rights of all clients.

Implementation of prevention measures against abuse of power, gender-based and sexual violence: 

  • Participates in training and awareness sessions
  • Implements abuse prevention standards
  • Ensures that team members complete training and awareness sessions and follow abuse prevention rules
  • Helps create and maintain a nurturing and protective environment

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Training / Education:

BSc in Midwifery, Nurse  with SRH program experience;

Experiences:

  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience for BSc holders, preferably within a humanitarian, refugee, or emergency context.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing routine ANC, PNC, active labor and delivery management, and clinical family planning services.
  • Direct experience managing acute obstetric emergencies and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Hands-on experience providing clinical care for GBV survivors, specifically Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) and handling PEP kits.
  • Experience with social and behavior change communication (SBCC) and organizing community reproductive health awareness approaches.
  • Clinical training certifications in BEmONC or CEmOC (Advanced Obstetric Life Saving Training).

Desirable

  • Previous experience working in newly established refugee camps, transit centers, or high-need displacement settings.
  • Prior experience working alongside international NGOs or UN agencies in integrated health, WASH, and protection settings.
  • Experience compiling clinical registries and assisting with health information systems (HMIS/DHIS2)

Skills: 

Technical Skills

  • Strong clinical midwifery, skilled birth attendance, and emergency obstetric care skills.
  • Competence in clinical protocol management for post-rape survivors (CMR and PEP kit provision).
  • Sound clinical counseling skills for voluntary family planning services.
  • Accurate medical documentation, medical reporting, and register tracking skills.

Core Competencies

  • Strong counseling, active listening, and empathetic communication skills.
  • Ability to care for trauma survivors and victims of sexual violence in a highly sensitive, confidential, and respectful manner.

Languages spoken by the candidate

  • Oral and written fluency in English and Amharic is essential.
  • Knowledge of the local Nuer language is essential.
