Position: Food Security and Livelihood Coordinator

ROLE PURPOSE:

The jobholder will support the pro-poor project beneficiaries and their families with sustainable food security and livelihood interventions to improve resilience of the target HHs. He/she is responsible to identify potential livelihood pathways (Crop and livestock, off-farm and wage employment) for the target HHs. Technically support target HHs to engage in small business development, establishing market linkages, employment generation, enhance product and productivity of target communities, Promotion of climate smart agricultural activities, enhance market access for the products that the projects targets produce.

S/he will also be responsible to support the project office in planning, and coordination, monitoring and evaluation of food security and livelihood related activities. S/he is also responsible ensures active involvement of communication with the communities and partners for smooth and successful implementation of project components as per approved project document and government and donor requirements and standards.

The food security and livelihood coordinator will bring thematic competence in food security and livelihood activities and will provide technical support for the successful implementation of the Sponsorship program in order to achieve the project goals, objectives, outcomes and outputs, thereby adhering to the principles, working approaches, and strategies of SCI. The Food security and livelihood Coordinator will work with Sponsorship thematic teams (sponsorship servicing, Education, H&N), project partners, stakeholders and beneficiaries, who are critical for the success of the project.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Food Security and livelihood Coordinator is required to handle the following main tasks; however, tasks can be revised based on the projects need and the staff profile and performance.

  •  Collaborate with zonal, woreda, relevant sectors and project target beneficiaries in successfully implementing the food security and livelihood activities.
  • Support the coordination and implementation of FSL activities as outlined in the detailed implementation plan in line with SCI program quality principles and standards, donor requirements, and good practices.
  • Facilitate the implementation of activities to secure food security and livelihood of beneficiaries, including providing technical training in agronomic practices of horticultural crops, livestock husbandry, business development skills, saving, cooperative management, and financial literacy.
  • Engaging and building strong relationships with key government sectors, community members, analyzing data collected to identify agricultural-related gaps, designing priority action plans and training modules on improved agricultural techniques, in partnership with the zonal and woreda agriculture staffs.
  • Restore livelihoods and improve food security for the project beneficiaries through providing CSA and business development trainings and continuous follow up.
  • Facilitate input and output marketing activities.
  • Identify and work with private sector actors for sustainable business linkage.
  • Coordinate and work closely with Sponsorship Program team and FSL advisor at CO level.
  • Facilitate implementation of climate smart agricultural activities.
  • Improve food security of target beneficiaries through promotion of environmentally friendly livelihood practices and technology and low-input ecologically friendly farming practices such as home-gardening techniques.
  • Organize and facilitate training and workshops for relevant target groups, community committees and other community members and submit related reports in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct technical business and entrepreneurial skills trainings for target beneficiaries.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the components of youth workforce development activities like facilitating training, provide coaching and organizing mentoring and work placement programs for unemployed and underemployed youth.
  • Maintain proper documentation of the project implementation process and outcome, lesson learned to integrate in to project activities and inform project strategies and report it to the Sponsorship Program Manager.
  • Track the project`s progress and make changes to the activity plans where appropriate with changes being discussed beforehand with the Project manager.
  • Compile Success Stories Most significant changes for activities brought significant change.
  • Carry out other duties as requested by the Sponsorship Program manager.
  • Compile and submit progress reports to line manager.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Qualification

  • BA/MA degree in agricultural economics, plant science/agronomy, Animal Sciences, development studies, agricultural extension and rural development, and other relevant social sciences; or
  • The equivalent combination of education and the extensive relevant professional experience in the areas of food security and livelihood is required.
  • Who have basic knowledge, skill and experience in areas of food security and livelihood, business plan preparation, value chain marketing is advantageous.

Experience:

  • For BA degree holders at least 4 years and above work experience in areas of livelihood and for MA holders at least 3 years’ work experience is required.
  • NGO experience is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of key institutional donors and their compliance requirements in respect of logistics and procurement
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching.

•      Flexibility, adaptability, and ability and willingness to operate independently in austere, remote and potentially hazardous environments for protracted periods, involving physical hardship and little comfort, and including possible extensive travel within the area of operations;

Additional job responsibilities

  • The duties and responsibilities as set out above are not exhaustive and the role holder may be required to carry out additional duties within reasonableness of their level of skills and experience.

Additional Note

Hardship allowance will be paid 50% of the basic salary for Female staff and 40% of basic salary for Male staff.
