Job Description

Environmentalists Development Association – Ethiopia (EDA-E) is a non-for-profit indigenous NGO engaged in the implementation of development activities like ecosystem protection/natural resources management, promotion of renewable energies, potable water supply, undertaking WASH programme and participating in humanitarian responses, etc.

EDAE is intending to implement the project “Deeply Rooted in the Future: Reforestation Supports Environmental Recovery and Income Generation in Dirre Inchini”. It will be located in Oromia Region, West Showa Zone, Dirre Inchini Woreda, an area with very limited amenities. The project needs to employ and station on site a project manager for the period of one year with a possibility of extension.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess the status of the existing community forests and the way the communities utilize and manage the forest resources;
  • Carry out the planning of forestation, reforestation and agro-forestry activities aimed at reviving the community forests and reducing degradation based on participatory approach; and prepare a multi-year plan an annual operation plan;
  • Facilitate the demarcation of the existing community forests and map the forests;
  • Facilitate, supervise, mentor and evaluate the implementation of the planned forestry and agro-forestry activities;
  • Monitor the development of the forestation, fruit growing and cut and carry system;
  • Carry out ideal nursery site selection, design the nursery store and fencing requirement, identify and equip the nursery with basic materials and tools;
  • Provide training to the beneficiaries in the various forestation, reforestation and agro forestry activities and participatory forest management principles;
  • Provide training to nursery workers in preparing the right mix of soils and compost, potting, watering frequency, shading, seedling production and overall nursery management;
  • Provide training to the beneficiaries in plantation that will mainly include: seedling type based pit spacing and sizing, how to plant seedlings and manage the plastic wastes, the care required to survive the seedlings, when and how to carry out survival count and replacement planting based on choosing the right season and how to maintain and share up-to-date data, protection of forest against fire and damage from domestic animals, growing bamboo trees;
  • Assist the implementation of participatory forest management;
  • Assist the communities to develop their own bylaws of wise utilization and management including the protection of their forest resources and the natural resources at large;
  • Coordinate the work of EDAE/ADBC with government plans at district level;
  • Perform other relevant duties as may be requested by the Project Manager

Job Requirements

Education:

  • BSc/BA or MSc/MA in Forestry/Agro-forestry from a recognized university.

Experience:

  •  A minimum of 6-years for BSc/BA Degree and a minimum of 4-years for MSc/MA Degree work experience in the specific project related field

Skills:   

  • – Excellent communication skills;
  • Good technical report writing skills;
  • Good computer and GIS skills, and
  • Good command of written and spoken English, Amharic and Afan Oromo
