Main purpose of job:

The British Office Sudan (BOS) is seeking a proactive and skilled Finance Analyst to join our team. This role will be central to providing high‑quality financial oversight, assurance, and advice across programmes delivering UK Aid in Sudan.

As a key member of the Sudan team, you will report to the ODA Finance Manager and work within the Operational Excellence team led by the Deputy Development Director. You will collaborate closely with programme colleagues to support strong financial management and ensure that value for money for the UK taxpayer is embedded throughout FCDO programmes and investments.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with programme teams in ensuring that value for money is at the heart of FCDO programming as well as supporting teams to meet corporate and fiduciary standards. You will also partner with corporate functions—including Commercial and HR to foster a strong organisational culture and support excellence across the business area.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and analytically minded individual with strong financial skills. The ideal applicant will be confident working with data, have advanced Excel capability, and be an effective communicator able to engage colleagues at all levels. Roles and responsibilities:

In this role, the Finance Analyst supports the effective oversight and quality assurance of the UK’s aid spending in Sudan. The postholder will have strong background in finance, alongside excellent analytical ability in order to support the Finance Manager to evaluate the portfolio’s financial performance and risk.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Preparing, analysing and discussing high‑quality financial and management information to stakeholders, including the Development Director, Finance colleagues and Programme teams.
• Leading the extraction, consolidation and quality assurance of multi‑year financial data to support accurate planning, monitoring and decision‑making.
• Managing and analysing financial data in Excel and other tools, using advanced functions and Pivot Tables to transform complex datasets into clear and relevant management information.
• Holding regular finance discussions with programme managers to review, support and challenge programme forecasts, pipelines, expenditure profiles and financial risks.
• Supporting the annual budget process by gathering realistic financial requirements, reviewing programme needs, and assisting the Finance Manager in delivering an accurate and balanced overall financial position.
• Strengthening finance capability across the office by helping non‑finance staff understand financial processes, corporate requirements and key ODA rules.
• Preparing and submitting corporate financial returns, including monthly and quarterly updates, annual accounting packs, large cash‑payment forecasts and year‑end submissions.
• Building an understanding of delivery partners and external organisations to help raise awareness of counter‑fraud, corruption and fiduciary‑risk issues, and supporting programme teams in undertaking due‑diligence checks.
• Managing monthly budgeting and forecasting cycles, ensuring that all data submitted is timely, accurate and robust, enabling leadership to take informed, evidence‑based decisions about resource allocation.
• Working with colleagues across the Operational Excellence Team, and with all policy and programme teams, to strengthen internal controls, improve fiduciary‑risk management, support the handling of fraud or corruption concerns, and ultimately contribute to delivering stronger and more impactful ODA program.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

• Experience of working collaboratively with programme and business managers, as well as finance colleagues, to deliver an accurate and compliant financial position, supported by robust forecasts and clear resource‑accounting insight.
• Confidence and enthusiasm in explaining complex financial information to a wide audience, including non‑finance colleagues, with the ability to tailor analysis to meet end‑user needs.
• Ability to review existing financial systems, tools and reporting processes, identifying gaps or inefficiencies and recommending improvements that enhance the quality and usability of financial information.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines, respond to ad‑hoc requests, and maintain accuracy while working to the finance annual timetable and corporate reporting requirements.
• Willingness and confidence to challenge assumptions, propose system or process changes, and support improvements that strengthen financial control, efficiency and decision‑making.
• Demonstrable analytical capability with a high level of attention to detail, supported by advanced Excel skills (including Pivot Tables, lookups, complex formulas and multi‑sheet analysis) to produce accurate and insightful financial analysis.
• Previous experience in a finance role with similar responsibilities, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting or resource accounting.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

• Experience of working in the International Development or Humanitarian sector.
• Arabic language skills.
• Prior experience working on or in Sudan.
• Hold or studying towards a qualification with one of the five Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies [CCAB] i.e. ACCA, CIPFA, ICAEW, ICAI, ICAS; or CIMA, or AAT; or someone who has undergone a period of equivalent structured training and accreditation in a specialist area of finance.
