The Horn’s proximity to the Red Sea places it at the centre of intense geopolitical competition over a vital global trade artery. This rivalry over the region’s ports and transport infrastructure has expanded to the agriculture, minerals, health and education sectors. This study will map the key players and dynamics, and explore their effect on regional integration, IGAD, the EAC and AfCFTA.
Objective
The study will map investments and ownership patterns in logistics infrastructure, and the links between logistical networks (such as ports, railways, roads and trade corridors) and regional power brokers. It will examine interactions between actors, resources and routes, and how they influence cooperation, competition and conflict among regional states and between regional states and external actors.
Outputs
The study will produce a report that includes strong visual elements. The report will identify practical leverage points for targeted interventions by specific stakeholders, aimed at improving regional cooperation and integration.
