Job Description

The purpose of the Education Assistants position is to assist in the day-to-day implementation of the project activities in the IDP, and refugee camps and host communities. The Education Assistants will support all field level operations including among others the mobilization of communities for enrolment and retention of children in schools. He/she will also supervise Community Incentive Workers.  The post holder is expected to demonstrate excellent community mobilization skills and motivate his/her team and deliver towards achieving the organizational vision of serving the IDP, refugees and host communities in Somali region of Ethiopia.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Generic responsibilities (max 10)

  • Adherence to NRC policies, guidance, and procedures
  • Contribute to the development of Jigjiga Area and CC strategies; participate in the development of relevant CC projects.
  • Implement Education project activities and prepare project documentation in line with the budget, proposals, strategies, and donor requirements.
  • Implement CC SoPs and ensure high technical quality of projects.
  • Provide regular progress reports to the Education Project Coordinator
  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection, explore and asses new and better ways to assist.
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders.
  • Promote the rights of refugees/Host communities in line with the advocacy strategy.

 Specific responsibilities 

These responsibilities shall be adapted to the particularities of the job location and context, phase of operation, strategic focus and type of programme intervention. This section shall be revised whenever a new employee is hired or the context changes significantly.

  • Assist with the implementation of the education project according to the plan of action/DIP.
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by the Education Project Coordinator.
  • Ensure proper filing of documents.
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.
  • Support Schools to enrol and register more students as well as document them.
  • Provide support to NRC activities, schools, and assessments in line with NRC quality standards.
  • Ensure direct communication and feedback with beneficiaries and relevant host communities.
  • Ensure ongoing monitoring and reporting of projects at field level.
  • Organize, support, and participate in community engagement initiatives, outreach and out-of-school children (OOSC) data collection.
  • Regularly travel to the field to support education, recreation, and psychosocial support (PSS) activities.
  • Support teacher trainings as required by the project objectives.
  • Organize and implement distributions of teaching and learning materials.
  • Implement any other task relevant to the position as requested by the line manager.

Generic professional competencies for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in Education project implementation in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Experience from working in complex and volatile contexts.
  • Experience with response to emergency
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities.
  • Knowledge and skills in Planning, Implementation, and Reporting of Education Activities.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal required.
  • Knowledge of the context in the Somali Region, and Language is an asset.
  • Flexible and hard working

Context related skills, knowledge, and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):

  • Previous experience from working in a humanitarian/recovery contexts
  • Documented results related to the positions responsibilities
  • Knowledge of Somali and English language
  • Demonstrated integrity by modelling the NRC values and ethical standards.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work.
