OVERVIEW

PATH is now hiring for our next project, implementing an integrated, community-based program in the West Hararghe Zone that supports vulnerable children, youth, women, and communities through coordinated education, wellbeing, protection, and economic resilience interventions. The program focuses on expanding equitable access to education by supporting school enrollment, attendance, accelerated learning for out-of-school children, and inclusive school environments, while also strengthening children’s physical, psychosocial, and protective wellbeing through health, nutrition, mental health support, and community-based child protection systems.

In parallel, PATH facilitates poverty-targeted women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to strengthen livelihoods, financial inclusion, and climate-resilient economic capacity, complemented by time-bound emergency and recovery support for households facing acute shocks. Through this integrated approach, PATH works alongside schools, communities, and local institutions to promote long-term resilience, dignity, and opportunity for vulnerable populations.

Position Purpose

The Education Technical Assistant supports the effective field-level implementation of education activities designed to improve school attendance, retention, protection, and learning outcomes for vulnerable children. The role focuses on operational support within schools and communities, including attendance follow-up, child protection monitoring, gender club strengthening, accelerated learning support, and engagement with parents and PTAs. The position works under the technical supervision of the Education Officer and does not hold financial or managerial authority.

Key Responsibilities and Expected Outputs

School-Based Education Support

  • Support implementation of remedial classes, mentoring sessions, and accelerated learning program (ALP) activities as per approved workplans.
  • Coordinate with teachers to monitor student academic progress.
  • Assist in conducting basic student performance assessments and tracking improvements.

Expected Outputs:

  • Education sessions conducted
  • Student performance tracking sheets updated
  • Attendance and activity records maintained

Accelerated Learning & Special Needs Support

  • Support identification and follow-up of students enrolled in accelerated learning programs.
  • Assist teachers in monitoring progress of over-age or out-of-school learners re-entering formal education.
  • Promote inclusive practices and identify students requiring additional support, including children with special needs.
  • Refer cases requiring specialized intervention to appropriate services through the Education Officer.

  • ALP progress monitoring documentation
  • Records of support and referrals for special needs students

Child Protection and Safeguarding in Schools

  • Monitor school environments to ensure safe and protective conditions for children.
  • Promote awareness of child protection principles among students and parents.
  • Identify and report protection concerns, abuse, neglect, or harmful practices through proper channels.
  • Support strengthening of school-based child protection practices.

  • Documented safeguarding observations
  • Timely reporting of protection concerns
  • Child protection awareness activities conducted

Gender Club Formation and Strengthening

  • Support establishment and strengthening of school gender clubs.
  • Facilitate club meetings focused on gender equality, life skills, and student empowerment.
  • Monitor participation and engagement of girls and boys.

  • Meeting attendance records
  • Club activity documentation

Community Mobilization and PTA Engagement

  • Conduct community sensitization sessions to promote school attendance and child protection.
  • Support strengthening of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs).
  • Participate in PTA meetings and provide education-related updates.
  • Encourage parental involvement in monitoring student attendance and behavior.

  • Community mobilization records
  • PTA meeting participation documentation
  • Improved parent engagement evidence

Attendance, Behavioral & Performance Monitoring

  • Track student attendance regularly and report patterns of absenteeism.
  • Conduct follow-up visits (home and school) for at-risk students.
  • Observe and document behavioral concerns affecting learning.
  • Support teachers in addressing minor behavioral issues through positive engagement.

  • Attendance monitoring sheets
  • Behavioral assessment notes
  • Home visit documentation

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Collect field-level data using approved tools (paper or digital).
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation.
  • Submit weekly and monthly activity summaries to the Education Officer.

  • Timely submission of reports

Decision-Making Authority

The Education Technical Assistant may:

  • Coordinate routine scheduling of education activities within approved plans
  • Recommend follow-up actions to the Education Officer

Supervises:

  • Tutorial Teachers, Data collector

Works Closely With

  • MEAL Unit, MPSS Unit, Psychosocial Worker, Case Manager Worker, Livelihood Unit ,Woreda/Kebele Education Offices, Parents and PTAs,

Duration

  • 6-month contract with the possibility of extension based on performance.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Work, Social Sciences, or related field

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in school-based or community education programs
  • Experience working with vulnerable children in rural communities
  • Experience in community mobilization or school engagement

Language Skills

  • Fluency in spoken Afaan Oromo (essential)
  • Working proficiency in written and spoken English for reporting

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for tracking attendance and student data
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word for report writing
  • Ability to use basic digital data collection tools (advantage)

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of child protection principles in schools
  • Understanding of gender-sensitive programming
  • Familiarity with accelerated learning programs
  • Basic understanding of inclusive education and special needs support
  • Ability to conduct basic student performance and behavioral assessments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting gender clubs or youth clubs
  • Experience working with PTAs and school management committees
  • Familiarity with Ethiopian education system structures

Working Conditions

  • Primarily field-based with regular travel to schools and villages
  • Involves supervision of SHG-style student groups and school clubs during meeting times
  • Requires home visits and movement across rural or semi-rural terrain
  • Standard working hours with flexibility to align with school and community schedules
  • Project-based role subject to performance and funding availability

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Gross Salary

  • 45,000 – 50,000 ETB, salary is fixed to current USD exchange rate
