IRC Ethiopia is implementing an 18-month project aiming at adapting existing Learning through Play modules from the existing program, and training and supporting teachers, parents, and educational authorities in using these modules as part of the crisis and COVID response.

In partnership with the LEGO Foundation, the IRC is implementing an 18-month project (beginning in October 2021) aimed at bringing play-based learning activities to children whose education and wellbeing have been disrupted and damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will target marginalized communities in the DRC, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. It will build on play-based social-emotional learning materials and approaches already developed in the region through the LEGO Foundation-supported Play Well and PlayMatters projects, led by the IRC in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The project aims to work closely with the full range of education stakeholders, including government ministries and education offices.

Position Summary:

IRC is seeking an Education Officer for the Lego Foundation-funded 18-months project in Konso Woreda, SNNPS Region. With the direct supervision of the Education Manager based in Hawassa and technical oversight from the  Education Manager in Addis. And with additional oversight from the Fiel Coordinator & from the Senior CPE Coordinator in Addis, the Education Officer is responsible for the LF Project education timely implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting of agreed activities in Konso Woreda. The Education Officer is also responsible to liaise with the Konso Woreda Education Office and with other sectors within IRC to achieve the project objectives.

The position is anticipated to begin in January 2022.

Job Responsibilities:

  • With close coordination with the MEAL Assistant, involves in clients’ data gathering on regular basis.
  • Ensures the quality day-to-day implementation of the education project activities.
  • Keeps the record data of clients in the target project area with age and gender and disability segregated manner.
  • Works closely with supply chain and finance to deliver the project activities on time
  • Works with the Woreda Education Heads, Schools Administrators, Teachers, parent-teacher associations, and other community structures to ensure the timely implementation of the project activities.
  • Conduct regular visits to project schools, as frequently as possible, to ensure proper implementation and monitoring of project activities.
  • Conduct regular meetings with Woreda Education Heads, School Directors, and other community members to ensure project ownership and efficient partnership.
  • Conducts project-related training in a timely manner based on the project work plan.
  • With close support from the Education Manager, initiate purchase request for the procurement of project materials timely and closely follows up for the delivery of the procured materials/services.
  • Produce weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports and send them to the Education Manager
  • Share regular project implementation updates and challenges. To all concerned.
  • Develop monthly, quarterly, and annual work plans, procurement plans, and spending plans in a timely manner and liaise with Hawassa and Addis SC for procuring goods and services with accurate specifications and realistic cost.
  • Actively participate in the project cycle meetings to reflect on the needs, success, and challenges of the project and document and apply lessons learned.

Job Requirements

  • BA/BED in Education, Education Planning and Management, or other fields related to the position.
  • Minimum of 2 years working experience in the education sector
  • NGO experience is a plus
  • Experience in managing emergency projects
  • Good technical and report writing skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluent spoken and written English and local language is a plus
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Computer literate with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
