Economic Security Coordinator 2

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Organization:  International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

Deadline: 28 October 2025

Job Description

What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Context

The humanitarian needs in Ethiopia are expected to remain elevated in 2026.The current situation of food insecurity in Etiopia is caused by a complex mix of interrelated factors often reinforce each other. Over the past three years, regions such as Tigray, Amhara, Afar, Somali, and Oromia have experienced the most acute levels of food insecurity.

  • The signing of the Pretoria Agreement in November 2022 has been successful in ending the war in Tigray, nonetheless Ethiopia is currently characterized by the presence of 3 active NIACs (GoE/OLA; GoE/FANO, GoE/AlShaabab) and 1 frozen IAC (GoE/Sudan). Conflicts and instability in different regions of Ethiopia have had a significant impact on food production, distribution, and access to markets.
  • Ethiopia is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate variability and climate change due to its high dependence on rain-fed agriculture and natural resources, and relatively low adaptive capacity to deal with these expected changes. Environmental factors had adversely affected crop yields, livestock, and overall agricultural productivity, exacerbating food insecurity in different areas of the country.
  • Ethiopia’s economic policies have far-reaching consequences for food security, affecting the affordability, availability, and accessibility of food for its population. In addition to that, the current political and financial crisis impacts the capacity of the Government to provide essential services that will benefit the food security of the country, as fertilizers, seeds and vaccines for animals needs to be imported.
