Within delegated authority, the duties of an Economic Affairs Officer will perform the following responsibilities:
Economic or sector analysis
• Monitors global and regional economic developments and identifies recurrent and emerging issues.
• Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development and draft resulting reports,
• Reviews documents and reports submitted to the office of the Deputy Executive Secretary-Programmes (DES-P) related to the G20 from other Divisions and SROs
• Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work, as well as background documents, technical and position papers and other knowledge products in the priority areas and high-level deliverables of the South African G20 Presidency, including position papers for African Union as a member of the G20.
• Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others;.
• Organizes technical and consultative meetings for advocacy and engagement.
• Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by the DES-P and the Director related to the G-20. Intergovernmental support
• Provides substantive and technical support on economic issues and other various thematic areas to the South African G20 Secretariat. intergovernmental bodies (such as the General Assembly, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Economic and Social Council, the Trade and Development Board, the regional commissions and the subsidiary bodies of each).
• Represents organizational unit at international, regional and national meetings. Technical cooperation
• Provides substantive backstopping for the Director and the DES-P to undertake missions at international, regional and national levels.
• Prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising the G20 secretariat.
General
• Supports junior staff, reviewing their work and providing feedback.
• Participates in intra- and inter-Departmental undertakings of broader concern to represent the views or interests of the organizational unit.
• Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work related to the G20 streams of work.
• Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting.
