Druggist/ Assistant Pharmacist_ Ura

Job Description

Medical Teams International holds strict child and vulnerable adult safeguarding principles and a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct related to sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse in the workplace and other places where the organization’s activities are rendered. Parallel to technical competence, recruitment & selection, hiring decisions will give due emphasis to assessing candidates’ eligibility thorough background checks, police clearance, and professional reference check processes.

JOB SUMMARY

The Pharmacist will contribute to the mission of Medical Teams by managing the delivery of quality pharmaceutical and healthcare services to vulnerable refugee and host communities in Benishangulgumuz Region, Ura Refugee Site. The Pharmacist is responsible for managing the health facility’s pharmacy, ensuring the safe, effective, and rational use of medicines. The role includes dispensing medications, maintaining inventory, counselling patients, and supporting clinical staff with pharmaceutical guidance in accordance with national guidelines and Medical Teams policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dispense prescribed medications accurately and provide clear instructions to patients on dosage, precautions, and side effects.
  • Monitor and promote rational drug use, including proper prescription practices and patient adherence.
  • Manage pharmaceutical supplies, ensure accurate stock records, timely requests, and prevention of stockouts or expiries.
  • Maintain an organized and clean pharmacy that complies with infection prevention and control (IPC) and safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular inventory checks and submit monthly stock reports to relevant supervisors or supply chain personnel.
  • Store medicines under proper conditions and ensure cold chain compliance for temperature-sensitive items like vaccines.
  • Advise health workers on medicine selection, drug interactions, and dosage adjustments, especially for children, pregnant women, and patients with chronic diseases.
  • Participate in training of clinical and nursing staff on rational medicine use and proper drug administration.
  • Report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and ensure pharmacovigilance practices are followed.
  • Ensure accountability and secure handling of pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in all pharmacy-related activities.
  • Comply with MTI and national regulations on pharmaceutical management, including documentation and reporting.
  • Uphold MTI’s values by providing compassionate, respectful, and culturally appropriate support to all patients.
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding.

Quality Management

  • Ensure all patients are treated based on the Guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the IMCI guidelines.
  • Oversee rational use in the assigned clinical setting of drugs such that only those essential for treatment are prescribed. Ensure that the team does not overprescribe.
  • Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who are present to the clinic.
  • Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent the spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff.

Other Duties

  • Support other areas of health activities as requested or needed to ensure efficiency and quality
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, disposing of waste and sharps appropriately.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Utilize volunteers when appropriate.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS

Required

  • Diploma

Preferred

  • BSc Degree in Pharmacy
  • Valid professional license is required to work as a Pharmacist in Ethiopia.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years of working experience after qualification.
  • Working experience in NGO is an added value.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of humanitarian standards, donors, systems and principles, e.g., Sphere, CHS, Red Cross Code of Conduct etc.
  • A basic understanding of the Ethiopian healthcare systems including the Dagu system.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for cross-cultural teamwork.
  • Adaptable and resilient under pressure, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian issues and concepts.
  • Fluent spoken and written Amharic and English.

Skills:

  • Moderately skilled with office software: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Moderately skilled with communication software: Outlook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Internet, CRM (or other database programs).
  • Analytical and problem-solving Computer literate, able to work efficiently in Microsoft office on standard or mobile platforms.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work flexible schedule and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to embrace and promote Medical Teams International mission and vision.
