Job Description

Friendship Support Association (FSA) is a local NGO working in Afar and Oromia Regional States in various sectors supporting the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities. FSA is currently looking for candidates for Civil Society Afar Project -ETH 1171.

JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of the DRR Specialist position is to work on DRR activities implementation, data collection, analysis and reporting regularly to address the needs and priorities of DRR project target communities and households. She/he provides technical support related activities of the project. Also participates representing FSA at Woreda level seasonal emergency need assessments and others as required. She/he also works in close collaboration with local government offices and communities in the whole process of early warning activities and in the process of updating all the concerned bodies on time.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Dedicate to community mobilization at the grassroots level on DRM
  • Responsible for coordinating and facilitating trainings and all capacity building activities planned by the project.
  • Support local capacity building activities in DRR at Woreda level, Kebele and village level Coordinate  the implementation of DRR  components
  • Work on proper and timely implementation of all DRR related project activities.
  • Collect regularly DRR and  early warning data (weekly and monthly), analyze and report to  the Project Manager in time;
  • Facilitate and participate in Woreda /zone level seasonal food security needs (crop and livestock performance, health, nutrition and WASH) assessments in the operational area.
  • Document reliable DRR and  early warning information needed for planning and development of emergency mitigation and preparedness strategies  for emergency response;
  • Identify appropriate mechanisms to which allow the capacity building, risk mapping, hazard, capacity analysis and contingency planning to take multi hazard approach FSA and partners staff to effectively implement DRR  systems;
  • Identify training needs and gaps for the smooth functioning of  DRR activities  ;
  • Coordinate capacity building trainings for  community  and Woreda levels  partners such as participatory hazard, vulnerability, capacity assessment;
  • Maintain good network with partner organizations at Woreda  levels working in early warning system;
  • Actively participate and support  project staff on the development and implementation of emergency preparedness, mitigation and development plans;
  • Ensure linkages of relief and development activities in FSA through provision of contemporary valuable and practical thoughts  around DRR and early warning
  • Help promote appropriate community awareness strategies;
  • Prepare reports on the DRR in the operational district.
  • Create appropriate links, working procedures and information sharing with other program staff Develop participatory program/project monitoring plan and internalize with the action
  • Collect basic information, best practices, case studies and lessons and report to her/his supervisor
  • Adheres to our Code of Conduct including child safeguarding and PSEA Standards

Job Requirements

  • Masters or Bachler Degree  in Disaster  Risk Management, Environmental Science ,Natural Resource Management or Development Studies or relevant discipline
  • At least 3 years of experience for MA and 5 years for BA in a project working on food security and livelihood, DRR Early Warning and Information Management, Livelihood development & Emergency response intervention.  NGO experience is advantageous.
  • Project management knowledge and skills;
  • Profound experience in DRM, Early warning and  Community Development
  • Ability to identify and plan the work strategically and to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to train others, ability to provide technical guidance and support to operation staff;
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel, and proficiency in Word and Power point;
