The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Job Description

Purpose

Driver Light Vehicles is responsible of transport and safety of the people and goods, by strictly following internal security and national traffic rules, in compliance to ICRC’s objectives.

With the Car Dispatcher, is in charge of monitor vehicles cleaning and refuelling; closely monitors vehicle logbooks, inventory of mandatory and safety items and technical condition (following Fleet Management instructions), reports discrepancies, incidents and maintenance/repair and support the mechanic for complex repairing activities.

Relationships

• Internally, interacts with logistics staff and to Customers during town moves and/or field trips.
• Externally, interacts with partners related to their work, such as spare parts suppliers, authorities’ representatives (police, etc).

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • Strict adherence to safety and security internal rules and national traffic laws;
  • Proper conduct in carrying out routine works (town moves and field trips);
  • Accountability and clear understanding of the impact of the own actions, communication and level of collaboration required for the organization and for the colleagues on their activities;
  • Ensure vehicles conformity, kept clean, fully functional, properly equipped and contribute to the execution of maintenance plan in time and manner are also attributed for this position, under Dispatcher leadership;
  • Assist Mechanics on complex maintenance cases;
  • Ensures that odometer control, check lists and other mandatory forms are correctly filled out and forwarded to Dispatcher and others related to fleet management each time a vehicle is assigned;
  • Ensures that technical and personal security standards are always followed, driver and passengers;
  • Actively assists warehousing team in keeping spare parts inventory updated;
  • Acts as an interpreter whenever necessary and maintain good personal hygiene and neat dressing habits;
  • Drives carefully to avoid damage or loss to cargo and assists with loading and offloading of personal effects;
  • Handles shipping documents (Waybills, etc.) with utmost care and according to procedures;
  • Operates HF and VHF radio communication equipment according ICRC procedures;
  • Maintains constant awareness of surroundings; immediately reports any unusual situation or event that may affect the trip/mission itself, passengers or ICRC operations in general.

Certifications / Education required

  • Technical school diploma or equivalent experience (high school level).
  • Minimum 3rd Grade or equivalent Driving License.
  • Excellent knowledge of Amharic and Afan Oromo.
  • Basic Command of English

Professional experience required

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Automobile maintenance experience (oil checks, changing tyres, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics.
  • Good knowledge of the geographically assigned environment.
