GIZ African Union Office
As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit” (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.
GIZ has been supporting the African Union (AU) on behalf of the German Federal Government since 2004. In line with the AU’s stated goals, the GIZ AU portfolio is now active in 35 countries across the continent in Africa. The nearly 230 employees of the GIZ AU programmes are based in the GIZ AU main Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and other locations, such as in Pretoria, South Africa. A central goal of the cooperation is to make the institutions of the AU more efficient and to support the implementation of their strategies and programs. The focus is on the areas of peace and security, good governance and migration, regional economic integration, and on the overall strengthening of the management capacity of the AU Commission (AUC). The GIZ programmes adopt a multi-level approach, accompanying the implementation of continental agendas in the Regional Economic Communities (such as ECOWAS, SADC or EAC) and in the Member States of the African Union.
In this context, the GIZ AU Office Addis Ababa is offering a position as a Communications Intern for the duration of six months

Overall Responsibilities
Responsibilities
The driver is responsible for
- Safely and responsibly performing all official trips using official vehicles
- Regularly servicing and looking after official vehicles (according to service book)
- Taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes and locations
- Running official errands
- Assisting with other office work
Tasks
The driver performs the following tasks:
Driving
The driver
- Provides passenger transport with the official cars for the GIZ AU Office staff on duty, official visitors, and guests
- Runs errands for the GIZ AU Office, e.g., sending letters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office supplies
- Helps with transporting goods
- Completes the vehicle logbook regularly (daily), correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards
Service for Vehicles
The driver
- Cleans the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly
- Checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery level and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.
- Is responsible for the GIZ AU Office vehicle documents and its good condition, keeping a vehicle logbook and recording monthly maintenance.
- Calculates monthly petrol, oil and lubricant consumption for the daily cash fund and for forwarding monthly vouchers to cost accounting
- Reports need for service and carries out minor repairs
- Immediately reports all involvement of the vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss, or theft of vehicle fittings.
- Reports about the renewal of Vehicle insurance and licenses
- Uses all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes and locations, and shares this information with other programme’s drivers
- Regularly seeks updates and advice from the GIZ Risk Management Advisor on Security and safety.
Support to Other Departments
- Assists the departments in matters related to the payment to taxes authority
- Delivers and picks up documents to GIZ Country Office Ethiopia, on behalf of the GIZ AU
- Purchases goods on request
- Supports in the preparation, logistics and organization of events, i.e. delivering, setting up and dismantling of WS equipment
- Assists other colleagues as needed in the Office if there is no driving service pending, carries out other office work on request

performs other duties and tasks at the request of the SupervisorWe are looking for an enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded team player with great interpersonal skills, ability to handle multiple tasks and work in intercultural environment. The candidate should be organised, structured, and have a strong attention to detail. Technical requirements include:
Job Requirements
Required qualifications, professional experience, and additional competencies
Qualifications
- Secondary school education
- Holds a valid driver’s licence
- Medical approved (visual test not older than three years).
- Ability to make minor repairs on vehicles if needed.
- Understanding and practical application of local road related laws and safe driving principals.
- Experience in maintaining vehicles, including checking fluids, cleaning the car, and performing regular safety checks.
- Willing to work long hours, evenings and weekends, and to travel away from the site.
Professional experience
- At least 5 years of work experience as a driver with references
- No major accidents in the past 3 years
Other knowledge, additional competences
- Preferably 1st aid training.
- Good knowledge of English Language written/spoken
- Discipline and punctuality
- Resilience and patience
- A good knowledge of the traffic law
- Familiarity with the city
- Appropriate appearance and attire (possibly uniform, friendly manner with all passengers)
- Always ensures unrestricted availability of vehicles and reports restrictions immediately
- willingness to up-skill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management
