Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following positions.

Purpose of the Job:

To support the Office of the Chief Commissioner (OCC) by coordinating EHRC’s work in relation to the development and implementation of a transitional justice policy framework in Ethiopia, in particular EHRC’s intervention to ensure that the process is participatory, inclusive, victim-centered, holistic, and human rights compliant.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate EHRC’s work on transitional justice (TJ) including awareness raising, capacity building, advisory and technical support, etc.;
  • Facilitate the development of a strategy on EHRC’s intervention on TJ as a national human rights institution (NHRI) including its role, ensuring alignment of planned activities with EHRC’s mandate and overall strategic directions;
  • Conduct stakeholder mapping to identify relevant actors and their roles in the design and implementation of a victim-centered and human rights compliant TJ policy framework;
  • Coordinate consultations on TJ with affected populations in different regions of Ethiopia, and the preparation of outputs from the consultations;
  • Coordinate EHRC’s work in conducting sensitization and roundtable meetings on TJ with state bodies, civil society, community-based organizations, and traditional and religious bodies;
  • Advise/support EHRC officers who will conduct needs assessment for targeted TJ trainings, develop training materials, and deliver trainings to different stakeholders;
  • Advise/support on proven methodologies that advance TJ related work such as formation of victims’ groups (associations), community consultations, documentation, and awareness raising;
  • Provide technical support and advice to EHRC on work related to TJ;
  • Closely follow updates on TJ including legislative or institutional changes in Ethiopia or in regions, and advise EHRC in light of the changing context and dynamics; and
  • Review key documents which have been translated into local languages for quality assurance and finalization.

LOCATION: Head Office, Addis Ababa

REPORT TO: Director, Office of the Chief Commissioner

DURATION: One year

SALARY RANGE: Gross monthly salary of ETB 30,907.00- ETB 36,811.00 plus ETB 10,000.00 Housing allowance and ETB 2,200.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidate’s qualification, experience and earning history

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • LLM in human rights, transitional justice, conflict studies, peace and security, humanitarian law, or other related fields;
  • Strong technical knowledge of international human rights and/or humanitarian law principles;
  • Experience working in conflict and post-conflict settings, preferably in Ethiopia/Africa;
  • A minimum of six (6) years practical experience in the relevant field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in research and analytical work in the context of conflict or post-conflict environment;
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills including experience in developing strategy documents, training material, technical guidelines, and public outputs such as advisory and advocacy documents and reports;
  • Experience in liaising with different counterparts, facilitating training, consultations, meetings, and workshops;
  • Excellent computer skills: MS word, excel, power point;
  • Excellent Amharic and English communications skills. Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.
