Job summary

Oversee physiotherapy services for refugee children, adolescents and their families who are survivors of torture, trauma and sexual and gender based violenec (SGBV). Provide training and supervision of local physiotherapists and rehabilitation assistants, work closely with mental health staff to ensure high quality multi-disciplinary care to clients, and provide training and support to help (I)NGOs and local physiotherapists organizations to better meet the needs of survivors of torture.

Consultant Physiotherapist Trainer Scope of work

Job Responsibilities:

20% – Clinical Supervision: Provide individual and group clinical supervision to rehabilitation assistants and physiotherapists that includes case discussions, live supervision, co-run sessions, coaching and mentoring and supervision of supervisors, with emphasis on self-care components. Assist in developing supervision systems. Strengthen interdisciplinary clinical practices and protocols. Model assessment and treatment interventions, lead case consultations, conduct observations and debriefings, and review documentation. Meet regularly with individual rehabilitation assistants, physiotherapists and as a team to provide training and supervision to further clinical development, monitor progress and caseloads, provide staff support and promote self-care.

20% – Clinical Program Management: Assist in the day-to-day operations of the program to ensure program objectives are met and activities are implemented in a timely and professional manner. Promote collaboration between clinical and administrative teams to ensure high quality interdisciplinary care to clients. Ensure the quality of the physiotherapy team activities. Hold regular meetings with the Psychotherapist/Trainer to promote Interdisplinary team cohesion.

20% – Clinical Training: Design and deliver short-term training programs for rehabilitation assistants and physiotherapists and the wider interdisciplinary team. Assess development needs of rehabilitation assistants and physiotherapist, adapt training and coaching accordingly, and adjust individual professional development plans.

10% – Clinical Program Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E): Collaborate closely with CVT and partner staff to fulfil the project’s monitoring and evaluation commitments. Prepare and submit reports documenting clinical and training activities and progress achieved toward program objectives. Provide input and feedback for grant reports and proposals.

5% – Program Development and Evaluation: Participate in the design of and implementation of new programs as well as program evaluation.

10% – Staff Support: Assess the staff support needs of CVT and project partners’ teams serving survivors of torture and gross human rights violations. Work in collaboration with the Psychotherapist /trainer to develop and deliver trainings to address these needs.

10% – Community Collaboration and Capacity-Building: Assess skill sets, systems and methods of mental health service delivery at partner centers. Provide training and coordination with other organizations to better address the needs of torture and war survivors. Carry out need assessments in local communities to determine appropriate physiotherapy interventions for Children, adolescents and adults who have been tortured and/or traumatized by war. Identify potential partners, target populations, appropriate program intervention models and program sites.

5% – Other Duties: Participate in other program and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses, or registrations

  • Master’s degree or equivalent degree in physiotherapy or related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience providing physiotherapy to children, adults and families.
  • Licensure or certification as a physiotherapist.
  • Extensive experience working as a physiotherapist with refugee, displaced, or asylum-seeking populations.
  • Experience providing physiotherapy to survivors of torture.
  • Experience in trauma and/or managing clients with mental health conditions.
  • Experience using a biopsychosocial approach.
  • Experience providing supervision and training to physiotherapist or equivalent positions.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural groups.
  • Experience providing individual and group physiotherapy.
  • Fluency in English.

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses, or registrations.

  • Experience working with CVT’s physiotherapy interventions.
  • Previously held a Physiotherapist Trainer, Associate Physiotherapist Trainer or a Physiotherapist Supervisor position within CVT.
  • Doctorate or equivalent advanced degree in physiotherapy or related field.
  • Work experience in chronic pain programs.
  • 7 years of experience providing physiotherapy to children, adults, and families and individual and group physiotherapy.
  • Experience supporting organizational staff to maintain personal and professional well-being and to manage job stress and vicarious trauma.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to cultural, political, social and economic contextual factors.
  • Experience as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience working with locally-run NGO partner organizations operating in low-resource and/or post-conflict settings.
  • Experience developing manuals and other written materials for capacity building.
  • Experience working in the East and horn of Africa.

Context:

CVT runs an interdisciplinary MHPSS project in Gambella Ethiopia providing healing clinical services to children, families and adults in Nguenyyiel refugee camp. This included physiotherapy provided to children, adolescents and adult survivors of torture and war-related traumas. The beneficiaries of this project are primarily South Sudanese refugees.

CVT Gambella is a difficult duty station with frequent disruptions of movement and services due to insecurity. The consultant would reside in a CVT compound and move to the refugee camp via humanitarian convoy. Movement around Gambella town is restricted to movement within CVT vehicles due to crime an insecurity.
