Position Summary

Position Summary: MERSA Media Institute, in partnership with Fojo Media Institute, has completed a national baseline assessment examining the state of journalism education and internship practices across Ethiopian universities and media houses. The findings highlighted critical gaps in structured mentorship, practical newsroom exposure, and gender-sensitive approaches in supporting female journalism students.

To address these challenges, the next phase of the project will focus on developing standard internship procedures, a curriculum module, and capacity building for journalism faculty to ensure effective, equitable, and practice-oriented training and mentorship.

 Key Responsibilities

Objective of the Assignment: The objective of this consultancy is to design and deliver tools and capacity-building measures that will bridge the gap between journalism education and professional newsroom practice, with a strong emphasis on gender responsiveness. Specifically, the consultant(s) will:

  • Develop standardized procedures for journalism internships and mentorships.
  • Create a curriculum module to guide Training-of-Trainers (ToT) sessions for faculty and serve as a long-term reference.
  • Deliver ToT sessions for selected faculty members to enhance their mentorship capacity.

Scope of Work & Key Tasks: The consultant will carry out the following activities:

Develop Standard Procedures and Module

  • Review baseline study findings and existing university/media practices.
  • Draft clear, standardized procedures for internship and placement processes, emphasizing transparency, collaboration, and gender fairness.
  • Develop a practical curriculum module to be embedded in journalism programs and used during ToT for faculty.

Conduct ToT for Faculty

  • Design and deliver Training-of-Trainers sessions for faculty, equipping them with tools for effective mentorship.
  • Incorporate approaches for bridging theoretical and practical gaps and for ensuring gender-sensitive supervision.
  • Provide recommendations for embedding ToT into routine university practice.

Deliverables

  • Standardized internship and mentorship procedures (document/manual).
  • Curriculum module for faculty ToT and future integration into journalism programs.
  • Successful delivery of ToT sessions for faculty.
  • Final consultancy report documenting process, tools, and recommendations

 Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in journalism, media studies, education, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in journalism education, curriculum development, and training design.
  • Strong understanding of Ethiopian media and higher education landscapes.
  • Proven expertise in gender-sensitive pedagogy and mentorship.
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills.
  • Prior experience developing training modules and conducting ToT.

Reporting & Management
