Job Description

1. Background

Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) is an Ethiopian Development Organization established in 2005 and reregistered at Agency for Civil Society Organizations as Ethiopian development Organization with Certificate no. 0321 under the Proc. No. 1113/2019. ECDD is working with other organizations to promote and facilitate the inclusion of persons with disabilities and disability issues in mainstream service delivery and development programs envisioning an Inclusive Ethiopia where persons with disabilities exercise the same rights and have access to the same services and opportunities enjoyed by other citizens.

ECDD has signed an agreement with the Save the Children to implement a project entitled “Civil Society Strengthening Programme for Children’s Rights” aims is to ensure that all children’s rights are realized and respected, and that all children survive, learn, and are protected. To ensure effective documentation, packaging, and dissemination of organizational results, learning, and best practices to strengthen advocacy, disability inclusion programming, and stakeholder engagement, ECDD seeks to recruit a Communications and Knowledge Management Officer, based in Addis Ababa.

2. Job Summary

The Communications and Knowledge Management Officer is responsible for leading ECDD’s communication, visibility, and knowledge management functions. The position ensures effective documentation, packaging, and dissemination of organizational results, learning, and best practices to strengthen advocacy, disability inclusion programming, and stakeholder engagement. The role also supports evidence-based communication and organizational learning systems.

3. Key Duties and Responsibilities

3.1. Strategic Communication and Visibility
  • Lead the development of a comprehensive communication and visibility strategies for ECDD.
  • Ensure consistent organizational branding and messaging across all platforms.
  • Manage media engagement, including press releases, media briefs, and interviews.
  • Develop key promotional messages in consultation with ECDD staff for use in each social media, as appropriate.
  • Support advocacy and public awareness campaigns on disability inclusion.
3.2. Content Development and Dissemination
  • Develop creative and effective content for web, social media, blogs, email, newsletters, brochures, success stories, case studies, and reports to reach and connect with target audiences.
  • Translate technical project outputs into accessible, audience-friendly content.
  • Manage and update ECDD website and social media platforms such as Facebook content, regularly post content provided by ECDD staff and other sources.
  • Create and manage an ECDD twitter (X) account, posting regular “tweets”, especially during organization of ECDD’s and other events.
  • Cultivate and implement innovative communications mechanisms and processes to disseminate project implementation results and learnings.
  • Manage the generation and dissemination of knowledge products developed through project implementation and partnerships.
  • Maintain regular contact with project coordinators to ensure ongoing support to gather and provide communications content.
  • Conduct field visits as appropriate to facilitate this information flow.
  • Ensure timely dissemination of organizational updates to relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries.
3.3. Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning
  • Design and maintain a structured knowledge management system.
  • Develop knowledge management plan in line with the overall ECDD communications strategy
  • Document lessons learned, good practices, and innovation from projects.
  • Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions, reflection meetings, and learning events.
  • Arrange for media coverage of various ECDD events, and ECDD participation in various media events.
  • Suggest additional ways that ECDD can increase public awareness of its work and of disability inclusion in general.
  • Support development of learning briefs and MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning) products.
3..4. Documentation and Reporting
  • Support program teams in documenting project achievements and donor reports.
  • Ensure proper archiving and retrieval of institutional knowledge products.
  • Contribute to annual reports and donor communication materials.
3.5. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Assist in maintaining and strengthening the ECDD network of relations with other development NGOs, OPDs, government offices and partners.
  • Strengthen communication with donors, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Represent ECDD in communication and knowledge-sharing platforms.
  • Coordinate with program and M&E teams to ensure accuracy and consistency of information.
3.6. Capacity Building
  • Train staff on communication, storytelling, documentation, and KM tools.
  • Promote a culture of learning, documentation, and evidence-based reporting.
  • Undertake such other tasks as may be assigned by the ECDD MEL Director and/or Executive Director.

4. Qualifications and Experience

4.1. Education

Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, Knowledge Management, or related fields.

4.2. Experience
  • Minimum 3 years (Bachelor’s) or 2 years (Master’s) of relevant experience.
  • Experience in NGO/development sector communication or knowledge management.
  • Experience in managing website, social media platforms and knowledge management systems
  • Experience with SEO, Google Analytics, performance metrics and analytics tools for social media, website and email campaigns.
  • Proven experience in content development, storytelling, and digital communication.
  • Experience working on disability inclusion or social development programs is an advantage.
4.3. Skills and Competencies
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Excellent understanding of digital communication tools and social media management.
  • Knowledge of knowledge management systems and documentation practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to translate technical information into accessible formats.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
