Description of the project

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.

Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With more than 250 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 40 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance, Sustainable Economic Growth, Health and Social Development, as well as Just Transition.

Sustainable Economic Growth is one if the five key sectors that drives economic resilience, innovation, and employment opportunities to ensure long-term prosperity for African societies, and regional economic integration. The sector has seven projects under it which have a combined volume of EUR 140.2 million and is co-funded by the European Union and the German.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Intern will be part of the Communication Service Unit for the Sustainable Economic Growth Sector.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Communication strategy: provide support in the implementation of a communication and visibility strategy
  • Communication products: assist in the preparation of communication and visibility products
  • Content: assist in writing and designing social media posts, articles and other communication products
  • Design: prepare concise and visually appealing presentations, reports or designs
  • Documentation and monitoring: manage audiovisual and publications and support communication monitoring
  • Event: provide logistical and conceptual support for workshops, events and meetings
  • Administrative: Provide administrative support to the project team as requested

Qualifications

  • Graduates that are allowed to reside and work in Ethiopia who finished their studies within the last year with a degree in Communications, English language or Literature, International Relations, or a related field
  • Strong proficiency in English is essential. Knowledge of other AU working languages is an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of graphics design and familiarity with InDesign and Photoshop is an advantage
  • Strong writing and editing abilities to create clear, concise and engaging materials
  • A good eye for aesthetics, storytelling and visual branding
  • Ability to conduct online research, analyse data and synthesise complex information
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proactive, resourceful and eager to learn
  • A team player with a collaborative mindset and the ability to work independently
