Job Description

Within the framework of CIFA’s Country Programme in Ethiopia, the Communication Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing internal and external communication and visibility activities across all projects and programmes implemented by CIFA, especially for the Second Life Project.

The position plays a strategic role in strengthening the visibility of project results, ensuring compliance withinstitutional donor visibility requirements (AICS, EU, UN agencies), and translating programme evidence and learning into clear, engaging communication products for diverse audiences.

CIFA is an international NGO with over 40 years of experience in protecting vulnerable children and youth. Activein Ethiopia for more than 20 years,CIFA promotes access to quality education, gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and inclusive livelihoods.

Through itsintegrated approach, CIFA has developed strong expertise in solidwaste management and circular economy initiatives, linking environmental sustainability with socio-economic inclusion. CIFA currently operates in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa City Administration, Amhara (South Wollo), Harari, and Oromia Region.

The Second Life Project aims to strengthen solid waste management systems, promote circular economy approaches, and enhance socio-economic inclusion through coordinated technical, institutional, and community-based actions in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa.

The project is implemented in close coordination with the Addis Ababa City Administration and the Dire Dawa City Administration, local authorities, and implementing partners.

12 months,renewable subject to performance and project needs,with a 60-day probation period and the possibility of extension.

The position is based in AddisAbaba, with frequent fieldmissions to project implementation areas as required (up to approximately 30% of the time).

Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive Country Communication Strategy aligned with the global CIFA strategy and local program objectives.
  • Create annualand project-specific communication plans, identifying key messages, target audiences, and appropriate communication channels (digital, print, media).
  • Ensure strictadherence to the visibility and communication requirements of all major institutional donors (AICS, EU, UN, etc.) across all materials.

Content Creation and Storytelling

  • Coordinate and conduct regular field visits to collect high-quality success stories, testimonials, and compelling human-interest narratives from beneficiaries and staff.
  • Produce and edit high-quality communication materials, including press releases, brochures, newsletters, articles, and presentations.
  • Manage and organize the mission’s photo and video archives, ensuring proper consent is obtained and documented for all visualmaterials (using CIFA’s consent forms).
  • Collaborate withthe MEAL teamto translate complex program data and evaluation findings into accessible communication products (e.g., infographics, summary reports).

Digital Media and Visibility

  • Manage and regularly update the CIFA Ethiopia digital presence (e.g., website page,social media accounts) in coordination withHeadquarters.
  • Monitor media coverage related to CIFA’s work and the broader humanitarian contextin Ethiopia, identifying opportunities for proactive engagement.
  • Oversee thedesign and production of branded materials (banners, signage, publications) for events and field offices, ensuring brand consistency.

Media Relations andExternal Engagement

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for local and international media inquiries, coordinating interviews and statements in consultation withthe Country Representative and Headquarters.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key localjournalists, partners, and communication focal points from partner organizations.
  • Organize and manage pressevents, visibility campaigns, and public awareness initiatives.

Internal Communication andCapacity Building

  • Facilitate internal communication flow, ensuring timely sharing of key organizational updates, success stories, and strategic decisions among staff.
  • Provide guidance and training to program staffon basic communication skills, safe storytelling practices, and donor visibility compliance.

Education

  • University degreein Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience in communication, public relations, or journalism, with at least2 years spentin the humanitarian, development, or NGO sector.

Technical Skills

  • Proven ability to create compelling written content. Proficiency in photography/videography basics andediting software (e.g.,Adobe Suite, Canva).
  • Demonstrated experience managing organizational social mediaand websites.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, and cross-cultural communication skills. Proven ability to work under tight deadlines.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).

Remuneration

TBD (Based on the CIFA Salary grade and steps).
