Job description

Civil Peace Service (here referred to as CPS) is a global programme for violence prevention and peace building in crisis and conflict regions. The CPS expert supports local partner organizations for the long term in their engagement efforts for dialogue, human rights and peace. Currently, CPS is establishing a new project entitled “Prevention of displacement and the sustainable reintegration of formerly displaced persons” as a new programme component. The project will be located in Ethiopia in the regional states of Sidama and in Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR).

The objective of the project is to support and enable representatives of local governmental structures, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, and media workers to apply their mandates and undertake action to promote non-violent transformation of conflict between different population groups, reducing flight and displacement.

Your tasks

  • Identify and assess potential for cooperation with civil society and local government organizations; network with relevant stakeholders and international organizations
  • Technical advice and follow up with partner organizations
  • Design inclusive dialogue process that focuses on the roots causes of displacement, strengthens displacement prevention, and supports women empowerment
  • Support partner organizations in the development of usable formats for dialogue, training and mediation, as well as their implementation in the region of Sidama and in SNNPR/Oromia
  • Conceive and develop tools to promote the active participation of women and youth in conflict transformation
  • Support the coordination of project design and advance its conceptual development

Your profile

  • Master’s Degree in one of following disciplines: social sciences, political science, peace and conflict studies, or similar field
  • Experience and knowledge in the field of civil and conflict prevention/transformation outside of Europe, especially in Africa
  • Proven experience and competencies in mediation and dialogue formats and their application to conflict transformation
  • Strong skills in design and organization
  • Experience in applying participatory methods to adult capacity building
  • Flexibility, resilience and ability to maintain composure
  • Readiness to work in rural settings and stay for a period of days where projects are implemented
  • Fluency in English (oral and written), German language is an asset
