Job Description

Background

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) are an Ethiopian civil society organization re-registered on September 19, 2019 before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency in accordance with Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The objectives of the Organization includes increasing the participation and contribution of lawyers in the area of human rights through trainings and other capacity building activities, supporting lawyers across the nation and help exchange of ideas, information and experience for better protection of human rights and prevalence of human rights, litigating strategically in courts and other relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights recognized under the FDRE Constitution and other laws, creating awareness for justice organs on international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia, providing free or low cost legal services for victims of human rights violation particularly disadvantaged communities, influencing the government to enact new laws or amend existing ones to give full protection for human rights, familiarizing the idea of human rights defenders (HRD) among the lawyers etc.

To achieve its objectives, LHR has been engaging with national and international stakeholders in the past years including OHCHR East Africa Regional Office (EARO), National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA), USAID Justice Activity Project, Freedom House (FH), Civil Rights Defenders (CRD), French Development Agency (AFD), Project Expedite Justice (PEJ), and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).

Currently, LHR is implementing a project entitled “Advancing Human Rights through Legal Aid Services”, with the objective of making legal aid services accessible to detainees in the early stages of criminal proceedings in police stations. In addition to this, supporting emerging CSOs is one of the project components.

LHR has been assisting Elibat Charitable Organization in the implementation of the project “Improving the Rights of Incarcerated in Correctional Facilities in Addis Ababa” with the support of Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The project aims to address the human rights violation against women incarcerated in the main prisons in Addis Ababa, namely Kaliti and Klinto.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a cashier who is responsible for organizing and coordinating payments at offices in order to ensure smooth implementation of activities and effective and efficient utilization of projects’ resources for intended purposes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect petty cash from the bank
  • Issue payment, advances and advance clearances only upon proper documentation is received with all necessary approvals and signatures.
  • Manage cash transaction
  • Prepare physical cash count on weekly bases on Fridays before closing office hours and archive the signed cash count form in share point
  • Scanning and archiving of cash documents in share Point
  • Record data to Database based on the checked, complete and proper documentation.
  • Record all transaction within cash box into Database prior the payment is issued.
  • Prepare published Cash Payment Voucher
  • Pay Salary and taxes prepared on monthly bases
  • issue the contribution of staff’s PE/PF prepared on monthly bases
  • support financial and project staff with minor tasks and request on regular bases
  • support Logistic/procurement unit by facilitating payment
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by supervisors
  • Perform other related duties assigned by immediate supervisor and management
  • Facilitates and organizing meetings and taking minutes
  • Handles outgoing and incoming correspondences, circulars and memos
  • Schedule programs and appointments
  • Keeps custody of correspondent files, procedures, other confidential materials and petty cash
  • Always maintains sufficient stock of stationary items of the office.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  •  Minimum Bachelor Degree in Accounting and Finance, Business Management and related field of study.

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) years of relevant work experience in finance with handling of cash and related areas.
  • Prior experience working on accounting work for non-for-profit making organizations as well as governmental project management offices is desirable.

Skills and ethical considerations

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Amharic.
  • Knowledge of administrative as well as financial regulations
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • Sharp time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong ethics, with an ability to manage confidential data
  • Ability to manage conflict by herself/himself
  • Excellent team player
