Strengthening Rural Value Chains (SRVC) in Ethiopia is a bilateral project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by GIZ in collaboration with the ministry of Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. The project aims to improve the income and employment situation of the multiple actors along three strategically important agricultural value, namely Avocado, Onion and Soya bean. The SRVC project is mainly operating in three regional states of Ethiopia, Amhara, Oromia and Sidama regions. Regional coordination officers are functional in Oromia, Addis Ababa and Jimma offices.

 Responsibilities and Duties

The Agriculture Advisor is responsible to

  • Maintain collaborative and fruitful relationships with project partners in Oromia region, in particular with JARC and Jimma University.
  • Oversee and proactively support project the implementation and operational aspects of the SRVC project in Oromia Region.
  • Support the work of the SRVC Project Component Manager (Oromia) and other team members as directed.

Tasks

The Agriculture Advisor performs the following tasks:

1.  Management and coordination

  • Works in collaboration with key project staff and operational partners to ensure the technical relevance and sustainability of the full range of project activities.
  • coordinates and assists in preparing and conducting SRVC project activities and carries out other activities required for implementing these components.
  • ensures the proper use of office, transport, and office utilities in accordance with the GIZ organizational use
  • assists national and international advisers in carrying out their work in the SRVC operational areas and in places whenever needed.
  • helps identify the needs of government institutions and other partner institutions in the operational zones and woredas.
  • participates in formulating project operational plans and helps synchronize the planning in accordance with the budget source available.
  • is jointly responsible with the partner institution for preparing, implementing, and documenting training events, workshops, forums, team meetings and other project activities.
  • provides technical advice to and ensures the quality, relevance and effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing activities by the project.

 2.  Networking

  • develops and maintains contact with all important partners and stakeholders.
  • cooperates with and supports the project implementing partners, such as Bureau of Agriculture, Jimma University, Jimma Agricultural Research center, Cooperatives, private sector actors, and other stakeholders for achieving program target/goal on developing the value chains of avocado, onion and soya beans.
  • provides technical assistance to consultants, local and international experts engaged in the project work
  • Represents the project/programme as well as GIZ / German cooperation in different meetings and towards partners and stakeholders.

3.  Monitoring and reporting

  • Develops technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting.
  • puts together an overview of programme activities of his duty area, limitations, success cases, and presents this regularly at team meetings.
  • supports project monitoring and updates information on project progress, documents and reports regularly on the status of results.
  • ensures knowledge management collects, processes and distributes relevant information, monitors communication and interaction between government institutions, NGOs and society through analyses of the media, direct dialogue, participation in meetings and seminars etc.
  • assists and contribute with PR work for the GIC-Ethiopia programme

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • University degree in an area of agricultural economics, agribusiness management, plant sciences, value chains, rural development, or other related fields,
  • MSc in one of the above fields has an added value.

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years’ experience in this area or agriculture, agribusiness, value chains and rural development
  • Experience in coordinating project implementation activities
  • Experience in collaborating with different stakeholders from public, private and civil society
  • Experience working in Oromia region, preferably Jimma, Illubabor and Bedele zones.

 Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office programmes
  • Proficiency in English, Amharic and Oromiffa languages
  • Willingness to frequently travel within assigned area, project intervention areas and throughout Ethiopia as required
  • willingness to upgrade the knowledge and skill as required by the tasks to be.
