Job Summary

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is accepting applications for its flagship Africa Epidemic Services (AES) – Epidemiology Track Fellowship. This prestigious, fully-funded, two-year competency-based applied epidemiology training program is designed to build the capacity of Africa’s public health workforce.

Fellows will undergo three months of intensive in-person didactic training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, followed by 21 months of hands-on, applied training within an African Union Member State. Under the guidance of expert mentors, you will engage in core activities of learning, including outbreak investigations, surveillance system evaluations, and advanced data analysis.

Key Responsibilities & Core Activities of Learning (CALs)

During the 21-month applied training phase, fellows will actively strengthen the disease prevention and response capacities of host countries by:

  • Outbreak Investigation: Leading and participating in rapid response and investigation of infectious disease threats.

  • Surveillance Evaluation: Analyzing and improving existing public health surveillance systems.

  • Data Analysis & Science: Interpreting complex epidemiological data to drive evidence-based health policies and interventions.

  • Technical Communication: Preparing and presenting scientific publications, policy briefs, and epidemiological presentations at regional and international conferences.


Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Africa Epidemic Services Epidemiology Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of an African Union (AU) Member State.

  • Age Limit: Must qualify as a youth under the AU definition (under 35 years of age).

  • Employment Status: Currently employed in a public health capacity within an African country, with a formal guarantee of release for the 2-year training and guaranteed re-employment post-training.

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited university in a “One Health” or related discipline (e.g., human medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, environmental sciences, public health, or equivalent doctoral-level training).

  • Academic Prerequisites: Demonstrated completion of coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, or quantitative research methods.

  • Professional Experience: At least three (3) years of recent, full-time postgraduate public health experience in an African country.

  • Language Skills: Proficiency in at least one AU official language (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, or Kiswahili). Multilingualism is a distinct asset.

  • Note: Advanced FETP (Field Epidemiology Training Program) fellows and graduates are not eligible to apply.

  2. Employer Support Letter: An official letter from your employing government institution granting permission for the 2-year program and guaranteeing your job upon return.

  3. Letters of Recommendation: Two professional references from reputable, relevant referees.

  4. Academic Credentials: Certified copies of degree certificates and official academic transcripts.

  5. Curriculum Vitae: Must use the mandatory African Union CV Template. Download the English CV Template or the French CV Template.

  6. Motivation Statement: A maximum of 500 words explaining why you are an ideal fit for this program and how this training will benefit your home country’s health security.
