I. BACKGROUND
Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) is an Ethiopian Development Organization established in 2005 and reregistered at the Agency for Civil Society Organizations as Ethiopian Development Civil Society Organization with Certificate № 0321 under the Proclamation № 1113/2019. ECDD is working with other organizations to promote and facilitate the inclusion of persons with disabilities and disability issues in mainstream service delivery and development programs envisioning an Inclusive Ethiopia where persons with disabilities exercise the same rights and have access to the same services and opportunities enjoyed by other citizens.
Based on the accessibility audit findings identified by the accessibility auditor, the project will support the introduction of shelter infrastructure’s, largely movable/portable structures, in selected areas of the shelter compound. The shelters encompass: All God’s Children Ethiopia, Hope for Children Ethiopia, Hope for Justice and Organizations for Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Integration of Female Street Children (OPRIFS. Except for OPRIFS which has only shelter for girls, the rest have both boys’ and girls’ shelters making the total number of the shelter seven (7). This is to provide access to inclusive and dignified shelters required for children with disabilities that aimed at protecting them from forced begging.
Based on the barriers identified by the accessibility auditors, the project will support the improvement of shelter infrastructure’s accessibility (Disability friendliness) by undertaking accessibility modification construction works (Movable Entrance Metal Ramp, Signage and Sticker) in selected areas of the shelter’s compound. This is to demonstrate the accommodations and modifications required for children with disabilities to participate fully and to show a model accessible shelter, where shelter administrators will practice for their future construction projects.
