01. Editorial & Publications officer (Senior Publication Officer)
Job Summary
The Editorial & Publications officer is responsible for the end-to-end management and quality assurance of all publications of the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), including the Ethiopian Journal of Economics (EJE). The role ensures efficient editorial workflows, timely production, high scholarly and technical standards, and enhanced visibility of EEA’s publications. The officer will oversee the online manuscript submission and peer review process, perform initial desk reviews, support the accreditation and indexing of the journal (Scopus, Web of Science, EconLit, etc.), and coordinate other publication outputs such as policy briefs, conference proceedings, and newsletters. The position is central to EEA’s mission of disseminating evidence-based research for policy influence and scholarly impact.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
A. Editorial and Journal Management
- Conduct desk reviews of submitted manuscripts to check compliance with guidelines, formatting, plagiarism standards, and scope.
- Oversee the online submission and peer review system, ensuring smooth workflow and timely communication with authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Coordinate the double-blind peer review process, track reviewer deadlines, and maintain accurate manuscript records.
- Support the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board in decision-making, policy updates, and reviewer recruitment.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication: structured abstracts, formatting, reference checks, and DOI assignment.
- Monitor journal performance metrics (turnaround time, acceptance rates, citations, downloads).
- Support accreditation and indexing applications (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science, Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Higher Education).
- Ensure compliance with international publishing standards (COPE, Creative Commons, open access policies).
B. Publication Production and Dissemination
- Edit, proofread, and prepare EEA’s publications (journals, books, brochures, symposia outputs, conference proceedings).
- Oversee typesetting, page makeup, cover design, layout, and proofreading of all publications.
- Coordinate printing and distribution of print versions and ensure timely upload of digital content to the journal’s website.
- Develop and maintain EEA’s online presence, including managing the journal’s website and promoting content through social media and academic networks.
C. Administrative and Coordination Functions
- Arrange payments for authors, editors, assessors, reviewers, and language/technical editors.
- Develop quarterly and annual publication plans and prepare performance reports.
- Administer and manage issues related to publication contracts, copyright, and Creative Commons licensing.
- Co-organize panels, conferences, workshops, and general assemblies; prepare meeting minutes and transcriptions when needed.
- Maintain accurate publication archives and metadata records.
- Transcribe the discussions of the EEA forums.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Editor-in-Chief.

About You
Job Specifications
Education
- Essential: Master’s degree in Economics, Publishing, English, Social Sciences, Library/Information Science, or related fields.
- Desirable: Specialization in academic publishing, communication, or research management.
Experience
- Minimum 4 years of relevant work experience, or 2 years as Publication Officer with demonstrated excellence.
- Experience in academic journal management, online submission systems (OJS, ScholarOne, Editorial Manager), and knowledge of indexing/accreditation processes is highly desirable
- Prior experience in academic publishing, particularly in economics or related disciplines, is essential.
- Familiarity with peer review processes and ethical guidelines (e.g., COPE guidelines) is critical
Personal Qualities & Skills
- Strong command of English and Amharic; knowledge of other languages is an asset
- Proficiency in computer applications (MS Office, publishing software, OJS, or other submission systems).
- Excellent editorial, proofreading, and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
- High ethical and professional standards, commitment to academic integrity.
- Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work with diverse stakeholders (authors, reviewers, editors).

V. Salary: Base salary 44,450 (Forty-four Thousand four hundred fifty)
