Orthopedician/ Orthopedic Specialist (On Behalf of Metema General Hospital)

Background and Objective

Under the EU-funded INTEPA project, Medical Teams International (MTI) provides financial support to strengthen the capacity of Metema General Hospital to deliver quality specialized healthcare services to refugees, internally displaced populations, and vulnerable host communities. Through this initiative, Metema General Hospital will employ and deploy a qualified Internal Medicine Specialist to expand access to specialized diagnosis and treatment, improve the quality of patient care, and reduce avoidable referrals to tertiary hospitals.

Job Summary

The Orthopedic Surgeon will provide high-quality, comprehensive, and life-saving orthopedic care. The successful candidate will manage both acute trauma and elective musculoskeletal conditions

Key Responsibilities

• Perform emergency and elective orthopedic surgeries, including open and closed reduction of fractures, internal/external fixation, joint dislocations management, tendon repairs, and life- or limb-saving amputations.
• Lead the orthopedic management in the Emergency Department, stabilizing and treating patients with severe musculoskeletal injuries, blast wounds, or complex polytrauma.
• Conduct regular ward rounds in the surgical units for pre- and post-operative patients, and run specialized orthopedic outpatient department (OPD) clinics for chronic joint, bone, and congenital conditions.
• Collaborate with physiotherapy and rehabilitation staff to ensure comprehensive post-surgical recovery plans for patients.
• Evaluate and stabilize complex orthopedic cases requiring tertiary specialized care before coordinating their safe transfer.
• Promote safe and effective use of available pathology equipment and supplies.

Qualifications and Experience

• Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized and accredited university.
• Recognized postgraduate specialization in Orthopedics relevant to the hospital’s service requirements.
• Valid professional registration and current license to practice in Ethiopia.
• At least 3 years of relevant post-specialization diagnostic or clinical experience.
• Demonstrated competence in diagnostic and management of orthopedic cases, and collaboration with clinical teams.

Employment and Supervision

The successful candidate will be formally employed and deployed by Metema General Hospital, with financial support provided by MTI through the EU-funded INTEPA project. The specialist will work under the hospital’s established administrative and clinical supervision arrangements.
