Landscape Alliance transforms science into action, unlocking the power of trees, forests and agroforestry landscapes to advance planetary health and human well-being. Landscape Alliance is the operating name of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the International Centre for Research on Agroforestry (ICRAF). CIFOR and ICRAF are independent International Organizations and CGIAR Research Centers.

Landscape Alliance (CIFOR & ICRAF in Action) is a non-profit, global research centre dedicated to advancing human well-being, environmental conservation, and equity. It maintains headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia, and Nairobi, Kenya, with a global presence. Landscape Alliance conducts research to inform policies and practices that affect forests and landscapes in developing countries. Its research embraces a green economy, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and food security and nutrition under inclusive multi-stakeholder processes.

Landscape Alliance and its Capacity Development and Education hub have expanded its Landscape Academy with a dedicated learning management system and community features with abilities for offline, online and blended courses, social learning, community engagement, collaborative course design and content management on landscape-related topics.

A team of instructional and learning designers work within Landscape Alliance projects and contribute to the creation and delivery of engaging online and blended learning experiences, including courses and resources such as guides, toolkits, and blogs, hosted on the Landscape Academy. This learning designer position has a particular focus on landscape finance and/or more broadly sustainable finance.

Duties and responsibilities


The main objective of the learning designer is to create effective, engaging and accessible online and blended learning experiences that help learners acquire specific competencies. The role focuses on assessing learner needs, designing competency-based curricula and experiences, and developing content and e-learning material/products in collaboration with subject matter experts.

 

Planning and analysis:

  • Support the course development coordinator with course scoping and initiation; collaborate with subject matter experts and project staff to develop course concept notes.
  • Lead training needs analysis; and collaborate with subject matter experts to define learner profiles, learning gaps and desired competencies.
  • Define clear, measurable, and competence-based learning objectives and course outcomes, applying relevant learning theories to enhance learning.
  • Analyse the learning context considering available technology, language, time constraints and access.

Course design:

  • Develop a comprehensive course outline aligning course and module outcomes with learning activities and assessments. Coordinate consultations with subject matter experts and integrate their feedback. As needed, design for blending online and offline activities. 
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts on content and assets, weighing comprehensiveness, accuracy, and relevance for learners.
  • Develop a course prototype that captures the course’s look and feel and the key interactive elements.
  • Develop detailed course scripts (structure, narration, interaction logic, feedback, interactive activities, assessments to measure competency, and development instructions). 
  • Facilitate a collaborative process with subject matter experts and ensure formal approval of the course design.

Course development:

  • Build the course in the selected authoring tools, based on approved course outlines and scripts. Facilitate a collaborative process with subject matter experts and ensure formal approval of the alpha and beta versions.
  • Produce SCORM-compliant modules, and select and integrate appropriate multimedia and interactive elements, ensuring technical functionality, accessibility and platform compliance.
  • Facilitate quality control, copy-editing, and, where needed, translation of courses in different languages, and support course administration on the learning management system.
  • Design course pages and define learner analytics.

Course delivery:

  • Pilot test courses with small groups of learners, and update accordingly, where feasible.
  • Support course marketing and outreach.
  • Provide learner support and facilitate a supportive learning community.

Evaluation and upgrades:

  • Design and facilitate use surveys, interviews and analytics to collect and analyze learner feedback in evaluation reports.
  • Oversee and manage the assessment and manage certification process.
  • Use evaluation data and learner feedback to iterate and improve the learning experience.
  • Maintain detailed records of the design process.

Education, knowledge and experience


  • Excellent understanding of principles of pedagogy for sustainable development and adult education, and having experience with online learning design and learning management systems
  • Experience with instructional design models (ADDIE, SAMR, backward design)
  • Strong demonstrated experience with Moodle-based LMS, Articulate Rise and Storyline
  • 5+ years of experience in leading instructional/learning design, or an undergraduate degree in instructional design, pedagogy or a related field
  • Understanding of WordPress CMS and data management systems or an undergraduate degree in instructional design, pedagogy or a related field
