Background:
- The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organization with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced people. It was founded by the Society of Jesus on 14th November 1980 in Rome, Italy. Currently, JRS operates in over 56 countries worldwide. JRS has been working in Ethiopia since 1982. Currently, JRS Ethiopia operates in Addis Ababa, Somali region (Melkadida, Kobe and Bokolomayo refugee camps). JRS Ethiopia’s main areas of interventions are education, livelihoods, child protection, mental health and psychosocial support, emergency assistance, and reconciliation and social cohesion.

JRS was set up by the Society of Jesus in 1980 and now is working in over 50 countries. JRS has committed itself in Ethiopia for more than a couple of decades with refugees from all over Africa.
Overall Responsibility:
- The vision of JRS for this project is that Refugee and local youth in Ethiopia with restored hope and with the motivation and skills become connectors in their communities and take the lead in fostering a culture of non-violence, dialogue and inclusivity. JRS shall achieve this vision through diverse activities that (1) foster capacity and relationship-building at horizontal level among youth from different identity groups whose connectedness and collaboration will enable them to present a coherent voice to decision-making at all levels, and (2) empower refugee youth to live a more meaningful life in the present. All this is part of the global vision of JRS to “recreate right relationships” through initiatives preventing violence and promoting social cohesion, which is defined as enhanced connectedness and collaboration between different groups – to the point where it becomes spontaneous.
- The Position holder shall carry out his/her work in accordance with the JRS reconciliation principles (listed below) and in a manner that reflects consistency with values and attitudes aligned with conflict sensitivity.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As Youth Empowerment
- Preparing weekly, monthly and annual action plan of the operation based on the agreed proposal.
- Collaborate effectively with authorities, youth centers, NGOs, and other stakeholders working with youth related and Sport related activities and issues to facilitate effective collaboration and communication.
- Involve in facilitation and delivery of dialogue sessions for adolescents and young adults
- Support the facilitation of peace club membership to students ‘at risk to ensure respect for their fundamental needs and rights
- Train volunteers in Dollo to enhance up the process of reconciliation and youth development projects
- Support marginalized groups as role models in minimizing deeply entrenched discrimination among the Somali Clans
- Participate in the design, supervision and implementation of activities, in accordance with objectives, activities and targets outlined within current donor proposals and in line with projects’ budget.
- Contribute with support, guidance and monitoring to youth led and adolescent focused partners such as the Youth-Led Innovation program, and Youth Centers with focus on building capacity for adolescents and youth participation, civic engagement, empowerment and skills building.
- Provide technical assistance and facilitation to the development of documentation and communication materials with focus on adolescent’s participation learning and empowerment including video stories, human interest stories, photo essays and info graphics together with JRS-Ethiopia M&E, communications team.
- Contributes to the development of adolescent and youth led strategy through documenting learning and good practice on youth led participation and empowerment in the Youth Led Initiatives.
- Organize the Community events and promotion of youth engagement–support in the development and implementation of youth led initiatives.
- Ensure the proper documentation of training and peer to peer sessions (pre- / post-test, attendance sheet, evaluation, reports).
- Ensure that all files are well-organized and secured and that all files are sent on time to PD
- Ensure the organization of training, meetings, peer-to-peer discussions, practice analysis sessions and workshops (collect quotations when needed, printing of the materials, availability of the equipment, booking of the meeting room and catering, liaison with hotel, payments, etc.)
- Translate resources and communication documents from English to Somali
- Compile monthly, quarterly, mid-year, and annual reports and submit them to the Project Director.
As Sport Officer
- Facilitate coordination and delivering basic sport trainings in three camps in Dollo Ado. (Kobe, Melkadida and Bokolomayo)
- Organize friendly matches periodically as part of community integration and conflict resolution strategy
- Organize and follow-up daily sports, recreational and indoor game activities
- Preparing weekly, monthly and annual action plan of the operation based on the agreed proposal.
- Conduct weekly meetings with the department incentive/volunteer workers.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, mid-year and annual reports.
- Create a folder which can help you to follow up and put the trainee’s profile in a systematic manner.
- Provide basic skill training for different group trainees especially for the children with special needs.
- Make a request for program materials as per the indicators and approved proposal.
- Support Organizing awareness raising workshops in different culturally relevant areas of major and refresher training for refugees, incentive workers and host community.
- Lay down clear objectives, learning experiences and our activities and how the stated objectives are to be measured and evaluated.
- Prepare criteria and recruit refugees to be trained in basic skills and officiating training.
- Give training and prepare convenient training schedule for refugees in groups and individually.
- Organize camp cultural day in collaboration with other departments.
- Make sure all the necessary sport facilities are in good shape and conduct monitoring exercises for the condition of the facilities.
- Encourage refugees to participate in trainings intramural games and in sport for life activities.
- Facilitating different sport events that bring peaceful coexistence between the refugees and host community youths.
- Facilitate or organize inter-camp sports events.
- Maintain open and professional relations with team members, promoting a strong team spirit and providing oversight and guidance to staff and staff in the youth centers.

- Conduct any other activities assigned by his/her immediate supervisor
