Job Description

Description of the project

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.

GIZ AU:

Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With around 250 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 40 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance, Sustainable Economic Growth, Health and Social Development, as well as Just Transition.

About Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change – AUC Component

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the GIZ Global Programme on HMCCC aims to address the challenges and opportunities related to human mobility in the context of climate change (HMCCC). A specific component of the Programme will be implemented in collaboration with the African Union (AU) with the objective to improve the capacity of regional and continental actors to implement climate-resilient, gender-responsive and conflict-sensitive HMCCC approaches, pursuing the vision of migration as a form of adaptation. To support the activities of the AUC Component, GIZ is currently recruiting an intern for the HMCCC programme to mainly provide technical and organizational support.

About Global Energy Transition Program (GET.PRO)

The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) is a framework for strategic dialogue between Africa and the EU. The overall objective of the AEEP is to improve access to secure, affordable, and sustainable energy for both continents, with a special focus on increasing investment in energy infrastructure in Africa. GIZ hosts the AEEP Secretariat, and it is one of the instruments of the wider Global Energy Transformation Programme (GET.pro) project.

Ensuring optimal communication through information sharing and alignment between African and European actors is a key function of the Secretariat. One way the AEEP Secretariat achieves this is through an annual conference (AEEP Forum), high-level dialogues and a regular webinar series (AEEP Energy Talks). In addition, the Secretariat produces knowledge products in the form of thematic reports, policy briefs and articles. The interns will be based in Addis Ababa and work in a highly dynamic, politically framed setting, with international staff in Africa and Europe to support the core activities of the AEEP.

About Accelerating the energy transition in Africa (ENGAGE)

GET.transform is a European multi-donor programme supporting energy and power system transformation in emerging economies. The mission is to provide comprehensive project manager services in areas like long-term energy planning, renewable energy grid integration, energy policy, regulation, and market development. In Africa, the Regional Window supports continental and regional institutions including the African Union Commission (AUC), African Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), regional power pools, and regulatory bodies to advance the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) and the Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP). The Africa Regional Window operates under the BMZ-funded programme “Accelerating the Energy Transition in Africa” (ENGAGE).
