As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development policy objectives. GIZ promotes reforms and change processes. In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 50 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors.

Since 2008, the Ethiopian government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, has spearheaded the Sustainable Land Management (SLM) initiative to combat land degradation and bolster agricultural output in Ethiopia’s highlands. This program seeks to restore natural ecosystems, enhance climate resilience, promote gender equality, and uplift community livelihoods through community empowerment and collaboration with both governmental and non-governmental entities.

GIZ has been instrumental in providing technical support to the SLM flagship program since its inception, operating at national, regional, and local level. The forthcoming phase, titled “Climate-Sensitive Innovations in Land Management” (CLM II), will span from July 2024 to June 2027. It will concentrate on strengthening the policy-making capabilities of SLM stakeholders in Integrated Landscape Management, offering policy and institutional guidance. The focus of CLM is on further developing the capacity of actors at all levels for the implementation of country wide Integrated landscape management, with a special focus on the implementation of bottom-up land use and management as well as digitalization, and the application of SLM in the Lake Chamo watershed.
