The Carter Center is a US based not-for-profit international NGO committed to waging peace, fighting disease and building hope worldwide. The Carter Center country office in Ethiopia, which assists the Government of Ethiopia in Disease Elimination and Eradication Programs, is looking for a qualified professional to fill the following post for its Guinea Worm Eradication Program.
Summary of Job Description:
He/she will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Develop strategies for improving sensitivity of surveillance for animal infections in Gog and Abobo woreda’s (ensure all dog infections are detected at a blister or swelling stage);
- Train Gog and Abobo woreda Guinea Worm Officers on strategies for improved animal health surveillance and the safe and humane handling of dogs/cats;
- Develop a questionnaire for interviewing dog owners/households of dogs infected with Guinea worm about dog movement and behavior;
- Conduct refresher training of Gog and Abobo woreda animal health workers to conduct routine BCS evaluations of dogs being tethered by the EDEP;
- Contribute to building capacity of TCCE staff and Government counterpart on animal surveillance, tethering of pet animals and animal welfare ; and
- Assessing the overall status of dogs in the area.
- Characterization of patient dogs and study sources of food and water for dogs.
- Study how tethered and/or infected dogs are treated and also their welfare.
- Supervise BCS evaluations of tethered dogs monthly and provide recommendations how to maintain healthy domestic dog population, as appropriate;
- Interview all owners/households of dogs (and cats) reporting Guinea worm infections in previous years to ascertain where infections may have been acquired and what the EDEP can do to improve surveillance and containment based on lessons learned from the previous infections;
- Take the lead role and facilitate animal infection prevention interventions in GW endemic districts
Required Number: 1 (One)
Terms of Employment: One year contract with a possibility of extension.

Qualifications:
– DVM from a recognized university
Additional/Desired Requirements:
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience
- Strong analytical skill and able to generate professional reports with very good knowledge of written and spoken English
- Self-motivated and capable of working well in a team
- Good interpersonal and management skill
- Willingness to work for extended hours and travel to remote field sites (villages & Kebeles) frequently
- Attention to details, quality and result oriented
- NGO experience is a plus
- Able to present recommendation letter from the most recent employer
